This is truly a dark day for British Jews. Today our Government has chosen to ignore the deep concerns expressed by so many of us. The measures announced amount to little more than political flag bearing for mendacious anti-Israel rhetoric and those who harbour a dangerous obsession with the Jewish State. These measures will succeed only in bolstering the very extremism they seek to target. On the eve of Rosh Hashanah and at a time when our community is more vulnerable than ever to the wave of extremism that has been building over recent years, these sanctions do nothing to advance the cause of peace. Nor do they make anyone safer – quite the contrary. Gesture politics of this kind feeds into an increasingly hostile discourse about Israel, and the cumulative effect of such punitive policies is to further embolden those, at home and abroad, who use hatred as a weapon against Jews.

So, here’s something you need to understand. From the perspective of the average Israeli, a Palestinian state would be nothing more than a staging ground for an invasion of their country, just like Gaza was, only on a much broader front and from the high ground. They see your attempts to force Palestinian statehood upon them as an attempt to set events in motion that would end with a squad of Nukhba men in their living room torturing their families to death. There’s literally nothing you can do to make them accept this. You can threaten sanctions, embargoes, war, it’s not happening. This is a nuclear armed state and you’re not going to foist this on them no matter what you try.

- Currently Israel is the 8th largest investor in the UK economy by per-capita ranking of business/investment presence in the UK. - Israel is also the 11th largest when it comes to the number of investment projects in the UK. - The UK also has a trade surplus with Israel in Britain’s favour, when the UK’s overall worldwide trade is in DEFICIT by more than £30 Billion elsewhere. - Israel also gives an extensive amount of military equipment and support to the UK for very little in return (see huge list, thread in comments) - Not to mention the vast military/security intelligence they share. Labour is willing to throw that all away to appease Muslim voters that aren’t going to vote for them anyway. This gesture will make very little difference to Israel but will greatly negatively impact the UK.

Israel removed every settlement from Gaza in 2005. It got Hamas. Anyone who says settlements are the obstacle to peace has not been paying attention.
