More than 1,000 people have been executed in Iran so far this year - the highest since 1989. UN member states must urgently speak up and demand that the Iranian authorities immediately halt all executions.
Seven years ago, Jamal Khashoggi entered the Saudi consulate in Istanbul. He was never seen again. Fifteen Saudi state agents acting under their official status used state resources to murder Mr. Khashoggi. High-level officials in Riyadh oversaw the elaborate planning, involving private jets, diplomatic clearances, a forensic doctor, and Saudi consular staff in Istanbul. This killing was then compounded by the State’s failure to investigate the crime in good faith. The killing of Mr. Khashoggi constituted an extrajudicial killing, an enforced disappearance, an act of torture - for which the State of Saudi Arabia is responsible. At an individual liability level, there is no doubt that the Crown Prince / PM of Saudi Arabia is responsible. As the US Intelligence agencies themselves concluded. As I concluded too in my investigation as UN Special Rapporteur. Mr. Khashoggi’s execution is emblematic of a global pattern of increasingly aggressive tactics to permanently silence journalists, human rights defenders and political activists. Accountability has never been delivered. Justice for Jamal's gruesome killing has yet to be served. His killers are walking free in the streets of Riyad. The masterminds are celebrated by too many capitals the world over. Should we forget? Should we turn the page? This is what the killers demand; this is what many powerful elite the world over expect. That we forget; that we stay silent; that we turn the page; that we look elsewhere. But we don't. We won't. For Jamal and for the thousands of journalists, activists, defenders - murdered, disappeared, silenced. We are part of a global movement. Who does not stay silent. Who does not turn the page., Who does not forget. So that justice for our loved ones, for our friends, for strangers is served.
