“Young” people (many of whom are not all that young!) are getting stuck in perpetual adolescence due to a number of factors including HECS and housing. Anyone interested in a stable future should be looking for any way to reverse this & support younger generations.

Last one on HECS for tonight: Let's be *very* clear: the only reason HECS is being talked about is that young people are being smashed by housing affordability. Yet again, our politicians are ducking the real issue and reaching for the band-aid 'solution'. #auspol

It’s sad how universities are seen as businesses, education as a financial investment proposition, gradually being restricted to the wealthy. They should be like libraries and schools; for everyone, and a net positive for civilisation any enlightened society is proud to support.

1) The parents are presumably taxpayers 2) Aren’t taxes supposed to pay for stuff that makes society better, like feeding kids for example, or why bother? 3) Gee wonder why no one wants to have kids with this attitude out in public

It's not free. It's paid for by taxpayers. And why should people pay for the "free" lunch of other people's children? Feeding your kids is the responsibility of parents. And if there are cases of social disadvantage where some kids aren't getting fed then we have a welfare

@MFWitches @AlboMP A and B both true. Poor optics, probably would have been wiser politically to wait. It’s fair to assume the PM is financially better off than most, this is fine, but if he cares about the welfare of the many struggling rn he should demonstrate it through policy and soon.

I think a lot of pushback has to do with fury over parents (especially mothers, especially especially working mothers) being presumed inadequate caregivers if their kids ever need to be fed by someone else. “What, you’re too busy/poor/uncaring/lazy to feed your own kids?”

It occurs to me that a lot of anti-kids+screens, as well as being anti-kid and anti-parent, might come from anxieties about our own screen addiction, and the suspicion these things might be bad for us. “Too late for my willpower, save the children!” sort of thing.

@clhubes I mostly use screens in the car. If I engage fully with my daughter while driving, we might both die! So I can ignore her screaming for attention (trying not to let it distract me and cause an accident), or let her watch the screen. Hmm, tough call.

It shouldn’t cost anything to visit your GP. But also, there are lots of things you need to go to a GP for that you shouldn’t have to go to a GP for, and there are plenty of things a GP should be able to do that you get bounced to ER for. The whole system needs review honestly.

@SydneyBattle This is a fun thread. Regardless of whether you define honey as vegan, fwiw honey bees are not the only bees, and by encouraging them to outcompete other bee species we do harm the environment by reducing numbers of pollinators.
