The real measure of a good product isn’t how many features it has—it’s how clearly it solves customer pain. Too many teams mistake activity for progress, filling their roadmaps with “nice-to-have” features that dilute the product’s core value. Before adding anything new, ask yourself: “Will this meaningfully improve how users achieve their goals, or is it just another distraction?” Saying “no” to good ideas isn’t easy—but that’s what separates products customers genuinely love from those they merely tolerate.
Product managers who treat feature requests like orders end up with products that look like a confused buffet. Your job isn’t just to build—it’s to figure out why customers are asking, and whether building it actually aligns with your strategy.

The backlog isn’t sacred—it’s just an inbox for ideas. If you’re not deleting as often as you’re adding, you’re just creating noise instead of clarity.
@shmonder My favorite is to delete ideas that didn’t get any new upvotes from customers for a long time. If an idea is important, customers will bug you regularly about it.
