Our position is that IL must step up and fully fund education. This session has proven that lawmakers have the political will to try to keep corporations & billionaires happy but not fully fund our students' classrooms. We say it's time for them to readjust their priorities.
What happens when federal support disappears? Our kids shouldn’t have to find out. But because our state doesn't fully fund education in MOST districts across Illinois, the impact of federal cuts is even worse.
It's a direct result of Trump's disruption of federal funding and dismantling of the Department of Education. Our kids deserve stability, opportunity, and MORE support - not less. Read more: stlpr.org/news-briefs/20….
Depending on how a judge rules by June 30, all of those services and programs could be scaled back or disappear completely for these students who already face barriers like food insecurity and housing instability.
Students in East St. Louis are on the brink of losing programs that provide not just support, but a lifeline.
Donald Trump’s federal voucher scheme is a test for every Democratic governor in the country. Illinois already rejected vouchers at the state level. Now, Gov. Pritzker has another choice to make: stand with public schools or open the door to a Trump-backed plan that would drain resources from the students who need them most. President Stacy Davis Gates reminds us that Illinois schools are already underfunded by billions and CPS and districts across Cook County are currently being forced to do more with less. Today, every evaluator in IL completes one statewide training & assessment built by teachers and practitioners that includes how to recognize and mitigate bias. ISBE's new rules scrap that and let every district invent its own training with no state review and no quality control.

After Western Illinois University laid off its entire library faculty, the union fought for the positions to be reinstated. This month, an arbitrator has ordered the university to reinstate them with back pay, recognizing the critical role librarians play in student learning.
