When setting up a new @Substance3D Painter project, you might have noticed this checkbox and wondered whether you should enable it. It primarily revolves around how your normals are calculated. If you're using Unreal Engine, enable it. If you're using Unity, disable it (Edit: unless you're using the new render pipelines URP/HDRP). This setting toggles between calculating normals in the vertex shader (Per Vertex) or the pixel shader (Per Pixel/Fragment). This setting directly correlates with how you bake your normal maps. For example, if you're using @marmosetco Toolbag and Unity (like I do), I recommend switching from Per-Pixel Calculation to Per-Vertex in the Baker object settings. This ensures that the baked normals match Unity's normal calculation method. Will you notice a massive difference? Perhaps not (though you might see some improvement, especially in-engine). However, it ensures a consistent pipeline and accurate normal maps across your workflow.
