A few years ago, choosing a language model came down to a simple rule: more parameters, better results. Today that benchmark no longer holds in every case. Gartner predicts that by 2027, task-specific small models (SLMs) will be deployed three times more often than general-purpose LLMs. Instinctools' engineers mapped out where this shift is already playing out. But the question is moving away from "LLM or SLM" toward how to combine them: a large model coordinates, while lighter ones handle narrow tasks faster and cheaper.
