Ruto and his kleptocratic Rift Valley gang are too incompetent to realise that the conversation with Sifuna isn't really about chickens and high-rise buildings. The chickens represent the problems of Kenyans. The gorofas represent Ruto's unworkable, lofty and extravagant promises and fake solutions, revolving around shiny concrete things. Sifuna is telling them that they are out of touch with the people. That their solutions are merely tender-based commercial ventures to benefit just a few in their circles, rather than citizen-focused development. But Mr Maria Antoinette and his gang are saying "why can't Sifuna construct a ladder to the 12th floor for his chickens" because they don't get it. They think this is just about Luhya chickens. And if they don't get it, they don't deserve an extra day in power.

Here is the question that European civilization has never answered: At what point, in the five hundred years of colonial practice, should a European person have been expected to know that what was happening was wrong? At that point, should someone have known? 1890, when the systematic amputations in the Congo were being photographed by missionaries and the photographs were being published in European newspapers and reformers were raising the alarm and Leopold II was receiving those reformers in his palace and explaining that the civilizing mission required certain difficult measures. At that point? 1830, when the Trail of Tears was a policy debated in the United States Congress and approved by elected representatives and challenged by lawyers and litigated to the Supreme Court, which ruled against it, and then carried out anyway. At that point? 1619? 1492? The question matters because the defense of European civilization against the charge that the Holocaust was colonialism coming home always rests on the assumption that colonial violence was invisible, unexamined, a product of its time. It was not invisible. It was photographed and debated and reported and litigated. It was chosen. At every decision point, by specific people with names and offices and moral agency, the choice was made to continue. The Holocaust produced Nuremberg because the victims were European and the defendants were the enemies of the victorious powers. The colonial period produced nothing comparable because the victims were not European and the defendants were the victorious powers. That is the only reason one has a trial and the other has a museum of natural history. Same civilization. Same logic. Different documentation.

Those predicting another 2007 are ignoring the difference, because 2007 was almost spiritual, the political divide was real, the loyalty was deep and you could feel the tension in the air before anything happened. What we are seeing now is not that kind of organic political anger, it is paid goonism, where someone is given Sh1,000, handed a stone and told to manufacture fear for politicians who cannot win honestly. A paid goon can reach a point and say, “Man, this is enough for the Sh1,000 they gave me,” because there is no cause, no belief and no real public support behind the violence. Ruto is cornered from every side, and good Kenyans are the overwhelming majority, so any attempt to use hired goons in 2027 will be met by citizens neutralizing them refusing to let a tiny paid minority terrorise the country.

One thing you have to give Edwin Sifuna is that he works very hard. You will notice that he is almost always in the Senate, even when the chamber is nearly empty, actively participating in debates and carrying out his legislative responsibilities. The same commitment is evident on the campaign trail. Almost every weekend, he is in a different corner of the country with Linda Mwananchi, holding massive rallies, engaging Kenyans, listening to them and inviting them to own his vision. It created a brand new international body called the World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization, with its permanent headquarters in Shanghai. So did the leaders of Kazakhstan, Cambodia, and Thailand, alongside representatives from more than 100 countries. While the robots and the chips got the headlines, those 29 signatures were what really mattered. Here's why: Whoever writes the rules of a technology decides who gets to win with it. The US is leaning on export controls and voluntary safety pledges. Europe is enforcing its own AI Act. China just built the institution that wants to set the standards for everyone else, and it put the headquarters on its own soil. And look at who signed... The founding members include Russia, Pakistan, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, and Laos. Together, the countries in this new bloc represent a population that dwarfs the entire G7.
