A masked vigilante is capturing suspected thieves and turning them into public examples. Police are now searching for him instead. In Lagos de Moreno Mexico an unidentified man known as the Mexican Batman has been detaining suspected motorcycle thieves. He duct tapes them to lampposts as a warning. At least five such incidents have occurred in just ten days. Some of the individuals were found secured next to the motorcycles they allegedly stole. Messages such as the Spanish word for thief ratero were written on their foreheads. Many residents have expressed support for his actions online. They believe he is addressing a problem that local police have not been able to solve. Officials however take a different view. They state that vigilante actions remain illegal regardless of public approval. As a result the Mexican Batman is no longer only pursuing thieves. He has now become the target of a police investigation.
