The hysteria over FCRA tells you precisely why India needs FCRA. Follow the argument and then follow the money. So please spare us the fiction that the FCRA Bill will “shut down civil society”. What is being tightened is accountability. And suddenly there is panic. We are told regulating foreign-funded NGOs is an attack on democracy. Since when did democracy mean that an unelected organisation financed from another country acquires a constitutional right to operate without rigorous scrutiny?

My wife and I went to a new dentist when we first moved to town. He came highly recommended so we didn’t think twice. At the first appointment, he told me I had 7 cavities. He told my wife she had 2. My wife has never had a cavity in her life. But we reluctantly got them filled. After she got them filled, I scheduled my appointment. But then, we got skeptical. Life comes at you fast when you’re staring at a bill to fill 7 cavities. So I asked for a copy of the X-rays and sent them to my uncle who is a dentist in another state. He confirmed what we were starting to believe. That dentist was full of it. The x-rays were such low quality that you couldn’t confirm if I had even a single cavity. Let alone 7. We cancelled our appointment and found a new dentist. The new dentist said I didn’t have any. The experience still shocks me to this day. Self publicity is not something real donors do. If a donor like Adani had stated on SM the details of their flood recovery donations, Congress/AAP/CPI or media with vested interest against the people might been out squeezing political mileage out of it. This wasn't an election campaign fund deposit with expectations of future favors but a serious commitment to the welfare of humans in their moment of crisis. Usually when donors wish to keep their contributions anonymous, they request it be made so. Maybe there was no such request or maybe the CM's office did ask & receive permission to disclose details. Whatever the case might be, appreciation can be publicly displayed where it is rightfully due. So stop whining, contribute & keep it anonymous if that is what your prefer.
