Jesus did not simply “die on a cross.” He was tortured. And when you understand what crucifixion actually involved, the words “He died for us” take on a horrifying weight. Before they ever laid hands on Him, Scripture tells us Jesus was in such anguish in Gethsemane that His sweat became “like drops of blood falling to the ground.” A rare condition known as hematidrosis has been associated with extreme physical and emotional stress. Then came the beating. Jesus was struck, mocked, spit on and scourged. Roman scourging was designed to destroy a man’s body. A whip could contain pieces of bone and metal that struck with crushing force and tore into flesh. With repeated blows, the skin could split open and deeper tissue could be exposed. Severe blood loss could begin before the condemned man ever reached the cross. And they weren't finished. They twisted thorns into a crown and forced it onto His head. They mocked Him as a king. They struck Him. They spit in His face. Then, already battered and bleeding, Jesus was led toward Golgotha. And there they crucified Him. His hands or wrists and feet were fastened to the cross. His wounded body was suspended while gravity pulled relentlessly against it. Every attempt to reposition Himself, every effort to breathe, meant pushing and pulling against traumatized flesh. There was no comfortable position. There was no relief. Only pain. His back—already torn from the scourging—pressed and scraped against the rough wood. His muscles strained. His wounds continued bleeding. His body weakened. And He remained there. Not for seconds. Not for minutes. For hours. And while He hung there suffering, people mocked Him. “He saved others; let Him save Himself.” But that is precisely the point. He could have saved Himself. He stayed. Then Jesus cried: “It is finished.” After His death, the Gospel of John records that a Roman soldier drove a spear into His side and “blood and water” came out. Physicians and scholars have proposed several physiological explanations for John's description, including fluid accumulating around the heart or lungs. But Christians believe something even greater was happening on that cross. The physical suffering was horrific. Yet the cross was about more than torn flesh, blood and nails. Christ was bearing sin. Your sin. My sin. The sins of the world. The innocent One took the place of the guilty. The King of Kings wore a crown of thorns. The Creator was mocked by His creation. The hands that healed the sick were fastened to a cross. The One who gave mankind breath struggled for His own. And He did it willingly. So when someone reduces Christianity to weakness, remember the cross. There was nothing comfortable about Calvary. Nothing sanitized. Nothing easy. It was bloody. It was humiliating. It was agonizing. It was sacrifice. And Christians believe that three days later, the tomb was empty. Death did not get the final word. Jesus Christ is Lord. Jesus Christ is Savior. Jesus Christ is King. He bore the cross so sinners could receive forgiveness. Repent and believe the Gospel. ✝️ The cross shows what our sin cost. The empty tomb shows that death lost.
