I had a client who could not figure out what was wrong with his marriage. Blended family — his kids, her kids, rotating schedules, inconsistent parents on both sides of the fence. Built-in complexity. He came to me wanting to improve things, which I respected. He had the want.
I asked him what a normal evening looked like.
He came home tired. Kids on iPads. Somebody fighting. Wife gone somewhere, then back and angry. No plan for dinner. They Uber Eated most nights for a family of six — everybody picked what they wanted, took their food, and went to their room. He grabbed his and watched ESPN on the couch. His wife ate alone in the kitchen on her phone. Neither of them had a problem with this. That was the detail that stayed with me. Not that it was happening. That it wasn’t a problem.
My job — ongoing, permanent, never finished — is to know her completely. What fills her cup. What depletes her. What she’s thinking about. What’s making her anxious. What she loves. What would make today easier for her.
That knowledge doesn’t come automatically. It comes from paying attention for twenty-plus years and treating the attention as a professional obligation.
Then there’s the surplus. I don’t just avoid conflict. I actively build. Compliments. Touch — the kind my kids see, the kind that tells them clearly where things stand. Humor. Time alone together. Date nights. The active pursuit of a woman I’ve already married.
Men ask me all the time how to get more from their marriage. The answer is boring: give more. Build the account. Double down on gratitude and affection until there’s enough surplus that the relationship can absorb the hard moments without emptying out.
You're tired. You're hungry. The tank is running low and you have maybe thirty minutes before you pull into the driveway.
This is the most important moment of your day.
Not the presentation. Not the eval. Not the meeting you crushed or the one that crushed you. The moment you open the front door and decide what you're bringing into that house.
I call it the fourth quarter. Men understand fourth quarter. You know what it means — it's when the game is won or lost. It's when everything you've built up to that point either shows up or doesn't. It's when character separates itself from performance.
The fourth quarter for a man happens between 5pm and 8pm. After work. Before bed. The hours that most men treat as decompression time — as their time — and that are actually the most consequential hours of their children's day.
Here's what I want you to understand about the paycheck.
The paycheck is the entry fee. The floor. The minimum requirement to stay in the game. Providing for your family financially is not your contribution to your home. It is your ticket to the building. What you do once you're inside — that is the contribution.
Before you walk in, make the decision. Not after you've already reacted, not after you've already snapped at someone, not after you've retreated to the garage and left your wife to handle the noise alone. Before. In the driveway. In the last five minutes of the commute.
Decide that the fourth quarter is your target. That walking into that house ready is the goal — not Netflix, not quiet, not being left alone. Being present.
You can bet money that someone isn't happy when you walk in. Everyone is tired. Everyone is hungry. The house is loud and the homework isn't done and somebody is upset about something that happened at school and your wife has been running the operation since before you got home.
Greet people with love. Basic stuff. A smile. Your wife first. Then the kids.
Then look around and ask yourself one question: what does this house need most right now, and can I be the one who provides it?
Cook dinner. Do the dishes. Take the baby. Redirect the energy. Help with homework. Fix the thing that's been broken for two weeks. Read the stories. Play catch.
Not all of it. The one thing that provides the most relief, fastest.
And then persist with that tone and that quality until the night is over. Until the kids are in bed. Until the house is settled and your wife can breathe.
Then rinse. And repeat.
This is one of the most rewarding things about being a man — not the career, not the paycheck, not the recognition. The fourth quarter, done well, produces a quality of meaning that almost nothing else can touch. It's like surprising someone with a gift they didn't know they wanted, and it's perfect.
Most men treat the fourth quarter like extra time they didn't ask for.
The men who figure out what they're actually built for treat it like the point.
That's the difference.
