This is one reason why the attack on empathy is so evil. If we have to wait for person after person to experience the brutality of this administration before we wake up, then we'll inflict an immense amount of pain on our country. But if, instead, we could place ourselves in the shoes of the immigrant in chains, then we can see the injustice more plainly. And no, this does not mean that we can't or shouldn't deport illegal immigrants when appropriate. It doesn't mean we must have open borders. But we can't lose our own humanity and decency in the process, and we must not use brutality as an instrument of enforcement.

The case for deporting gang members, drug dealers, sex offenders and other criminals who endanger others is self-evident. The case for deporting an otherwise law-abiding illegal entrant or visa overstayer is less clear. At a minimum, there seems to be little return on investment for putting resources into deporting — as the administration has — a married couple who run a landscaping business and have lived in the country for three decades, or a U.S.-born toddler sent to Haiti because the president unilaterally ended the kid’s parents’ temporary protected status. The good news is this is not the odious policy of family separation. The bad news is we’re sending a U.S.-born child to the chaos of gang-ridden Haiti and basically saying, “Good luck, kid.”

The statutes FIRE challenged effectively grant unilateral authority to the Secretary of State to deport someone for anything they say. Read them for yourself. They are a recipe for arbitrary and capricious power — the exact thing the Founders were most keen to prevent. One Tufts student simply co-authored an op-ed critical of Israel and was snatched off the street by plain-clothed officers. The second statute was the purported authority. Hopefully FIRE is successful and we will not have to see the day when a future AOC or Ossoff administration weaponizes these statutes to deport pro-Israel or pro-MAGA speakers.

Let's review. Trump has assured people over and over that he loves legal immigration. Meanwhile, his administration slashed student visas, paused green cards for certain countries, suspended refugee resettlement, and all but eliminated asylum claims. They tried to deport someone over an *op-ed.* They're attempting to add a $100,000 tax for international student workers & another $103,000 tax for H-1B visas. And that's to say nothing of the mass-termination of TPS, which is sending some important industries, like home health care, into chaos. It's a backwards, self-defeating immigration policy that hurts America. The Trump administration likes to talk about economic growth, but it is opting for degrowth and decline. That's a choice.

"Fewer immigrants means more jobs for Americans" is what is know as the "lump of labor" fallacy. In reality, fewer workers means a smaller economy, and a smaller economy means fewer jobs to go around, and fewer jobs to go around means slower growth, and native workers lose out.
