Jonathan Haskel has been nominated to be the next Chair of the Office for Budget Responsibility. Currently a Professor at Imperial, he's done lots of research into productivity (including the role of AI), economic inactivity, and various other issues highly relevant to the OBR.

Britain won’t have any frontier AI infrastructure if data centres can’t get power. This consultation would move the grid away from a pure ‘first come, first served’ system and towards prioritising projects that are actually ready to build and matter for growth. In practice, large demand customers (like hyperscalers) could build their own high-voltage connections rather than waiting years in a queue clogged with non-viable projects. Some more good news today... The Government is consulting on letting industry build their own grid connections. Something @watt_direction and @BritishProgress have been pushing for a while 👏 Grid connections are one of the biggest constraints on new data centres in the UK.

Contrary to what has become a standard view in policy circles, the British state does not invest far less than its peer countries. British public investment is on par with the OECD average and higher than it is Germany, Italy and Spain. Indeed, when it comes to transport, we spend more: about 22% more than the OECD average.

The announcement yesterday that the Government is going ahead with setting up a development corporation for Greater Cambridge has not yet received enough attention. Winning cross-party support, it is a significant step to deliver for ordinary working people and to enable growth of critical industries that are vital to deliver jobs and funding for services across the country as a whole. With it came the announcement that, as a first step, Homes England is moving forward on the development of 10,000 homes in an ambitious extension of Cambridge on a former airfield to the east. Enabling homes where there is the greatest shortage and the greatest additional social and economic value to be created, as shown by the enormous gap between the costs of building homes and the value that the completed homes will have in places like Cambridge, is one of the fastest and most effective ways to raise living standards across the country. Done carefully, it can be done without net central government funding, releasing more funds to be invested in other places and regions. Congratulations to everyone inside and outside local and national government who worked so hard on this.
