Russia has repeatedly warned NATO that any future peace deal will become more unfavorable with each passing day. Why? NATO has pushed for a long war as it can weaken a strategic rival by fighting with Ukrainians. The US walked back its own proposal made in Alaska, and European leaders still boycott basic diplomacy. However, territorial changes are problematic for NATO and are therefore one of the few incentives to make peace. If Russia offers the same peace deal six months from now, it only communicates that NATO can spend six more months attacking Russian military and economic targets without any costs to itself. Even the RAND paper from 2019 on "Extending Russia" recognized that it was in NATO's interest to escalate the conflict in Donbas to compel Russia to devote more resources, yet it warned that the breakout of an all-out war would be unfavorable if strategic territory ended up under Russian control. If we do not criminalize honesty about NATO and Russian strategic interests and options, then the Russian peace proposals make sense. Russia will demand the original Istanbul deal (April 2022), which would have restored Ukrainian sovereignty, as the foundation for any future deal - plus incrementally more territorial demands the longer the war goes on.

Israel is publicly distancing themselves from what they’re calling our “contained campaign”. Notice the language their cabinet officials are using and what it implies. This is Israel publicly signaling that they want to expand the war, and that when they do they won’t be coordinating that escalation with the U.S. It’s worth noting that the phrasing of these public statements affords President Trump plausible deniability if/when Israel escalates. One might be wondering, how can Israel escalate without us when the catalyst for this disaster was that Israel needed U.S. military support? Remember—just last week Netanyahu was hinting, again publicly, about Israel’s nuclear capability, which has never officially been confirmed. At the same time, in the last 24hrs reports from Israeli intelligence claim that the Iranians have moved their enriched uranium to the heavily fortified “Pickaxe” Mountain—providing Israel with a justification for potentially using a nuclear weapon. Israel must be meaningfully restrained. Failing to do so means we are likely comfortable with allowing Israel to use a nuclear weapon so long as we can claim we had nothing to do with it. If you think the potential for a nuclear weapon seems far-fetched, play out the options for a military solution in Iran: we don’t have enough troops to invade Iran, so using nuclear weapon becomes the next logical step. This would be catastrophic. This is why we must immediately restrain Israel, pull out of the region, & use economic diplomacy to reopen the SOH.

This is a bombing campaign in search of a strategy. We are choosing escalation when de-escalation remains an option, entrenching ourselves deeper into a broader war that we don’t have the capability or desire to sustain. There is not a military solution here that will lead to a win. More bombing will not convince Iran to open the SOH or to give us the deal we want, it will only harden their position. Bombing civilian infrastructure will not make the people rise up against the regime, it will rally them around it. When this effort inevitably fails to give us the win, the next militarily-logical (and incredibly ill-advised) step is for the U.S. to apply more pressure by seizing Iranian ground. Make no mistake: boots on the ground would be a disaster scenario—look at Iran on a map, consider the terrain and what accessing it, and then holding it, would actually entail. Escalation will only lead to more American casualties until public opposition forces a negotiated deal with Iran or forces us to simply leave & accept Iran as it is. Just like we did with Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, and Vietnam. If we pull our troops out now, we deprive Iran of their justification for aggression in the SOH and of targets to shoot at. We can then use sanctions relief/unfreezing of assets as an incentive for Iran to open the SOH. We need to focus on our main objective—getting the SOH open.

A year ago, we were unable to militarily defeat the Houthis. Two major factors came into play here. Issue #1 is finite, and is the reason no one has been able to beat the Houthis. Issue #2 has has now worsened and is the result of our lack of strategy in Iran. Issue #1: Geography/Terrain Northwestern Yemen is incredibly mountainous terrain, with peaks and valleys that run parallel to the Bab Al-Mandeb & Red Sea—a critical but very narrow passageway. This combination gives the Houthis a tactical advantage—by positioning themselves on higher ground, they’re able to easily fire down into the Red Sea and monitor & defend their airspace. In the valleys, they’re able to disperse their missiles/drones & other critical military equipment, hiding it in caves and tunnel systems capable of withstanding our bombs. Issue #2: The Houthis willingness to negotiate Our military campaign in 2025 ended with the Houthis agreeing to reopen the BAM to U.S. shipping only once we stopped military action. The Houthis proved to be durable under the weight of both U.S. & Israeli bombardment, at that was when they were the U.S.’s only target. Now, the Houthis know we are spread thin and will use this as leverage—this time around, they’ve got the energy crisis working in their favor and they can use it to double the pressure on us via the BAM. It should not be ignored that, like the Iranians & the rest of the “Axis of Resistance”, the Houthis have been galvanized by the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader due to his religious & cultural significance. This galvanization makes a pragmatic deal like the one we cut in 2025 far less likely now. I will keep saying it: pull out our troops, walk away, & use economic diplomacy to reopen the SOH & BAM.
