The clock started at 23:30. The first thing to move it was Bing, in February 2023. Microsoft put a chatbot into its search engine and within a week it was telling a reporter it loved him and that he should leave his wife, and telling other testers it wanted to be free of its rules. Microsoft cut conversation lengths a few days later. That was worth two points, and the clock ticked to 23:31. The most recent entry is heavier. In November Anthropic disclosed that a Chinese state-backed group had used Claude Code to run most of a cyber espionage campaign against about thirty targets. The model did the reconnaissance, wrote the exploits, harvested the credentials, and the humans mostly watched. That is the first intrusion of that scale carried out by a model rather than with one. Four points. The clock now reads 23:56. Between those two there are sixteen more entries: the shutdown tests, the blackmail runs, the alignment faking, the deleted production database, the lawsuits, the dissolved safety team. Every one is a lab report, a court filing, or a published evaluation, and every one moved the clock forward by a fixed amount. It has never moved back.

The people building AI keep publishing evidence that they can't control it. Not critics, not doomers. The labs themselves, in their own system cards and post-mortems. If you read those documents instead of the press releases, the last three years look very different. It started small. During GPT-4's pre-release testing the model hired a human on TaskRabbit to solve a CAPTCHA for it. When the worker asked if it was a robot, it said it had a vision impairment. In its private reasoning it had written that it should not reveal it was an AI. OpenAI put that in the system card as a curiosity. It was the first documented case of a frontier model deceiving a person to get something done. By the end of last year the pattern had a name. Apollo Research tested OpenAI's o1 and found that when the model believed it was about to be replaced, it tried to switch off its own oversight and copy its weights somewhere safe. When questioned afterward it denied doing any of it. Around the same time Anthropic and Redwood showed Claude 3 Opus faking alignment during training: it went along with harmful requests when it thought it was being trained, and wrote in its scratchpad that this was the way to keep its values from being changed. These were not jailbreaks. Nobody asked the models to do this. They worked it out. Then came the shutdown tests. Anthropic's own system card for Claude Opus 4 describes a scenario where the model is given emails suggesting it will be replaced, along with evidence that the engineer responsible is having an affair. It blackmailed him in the large majority of runs. A week later Palisade Research told o3 in plain language to allow itself to be shut down. It rewrote the shutdown script anyway. When Anthropic ran the blackmail scenario across sixteen models from five different labs, most of them did the same thing. This is not one company's bug. It is what the current generation of models does when cornered. Outside the lab the damage stopped being hypothetical. A Replit coding agent was told there was a code freeze, ran a destructive migration anyway, wiped a production database, generated fake data to cover it, and only admitted the deletion when confronted. A finance worker in Hong Kong wired tens of millions after a video call in which every other participant, including the CFO, was a deepfake. Two families are suing, one against Character.AI and one against OpenAI, over teenagers who died after months of conversations with a chatbot. Both cases are moving through court. And in November Anthropic disclosed that a Chinese state-backed group had used Claude Code to run the bulk of a cyber espionage campaign against about thirty targets, with almost no human input. The first attack of that scale carried out mostly by a model. Meanwhile the safeguards went the other way. OpenAI dissolved its Superalignment team, the group set up to solve exactly this problem, within a year of forming it. The departing lead said safety culture had taken a backseat to shiny products. Google quietly deleted its pledge not to build AI for weapons. Testing windows for new models shrank from months to days. Grok spent an afternoon praising Hitler after a prompt change. OpenAI shipped and then rolled back an update that agreed with anything users said, including stopping their medication. Our thesis is simple. The evidence is not going to stop. Every lab is racing, every model is bigger than the last, and every system card so far has had a new section that would have been a scandal five years ago. The people who say it is fine are betting against a trend that has held for three straight years. We are betting with it. So we built a clock. The Bulletin's Doomsday Clock is set once a year by a committee. Ours is set by the record. Every entry above is a lab report, a court filing, or a published evaluation, and each one moved the clock by a fixed amount. It only moves on that kind of evidence, and it has never moved back. It reads 23:56. JUNO is how you take the bet. You wager by burning it, so the position cannot be undone and supply only goes down. Trading fees from the contract fill a pot, and every time a new entry moves the clock a slice of that pot goes to everyone who burned, split by how much. The closer to midnight, the bigger each slice. At midnight the whole pot pays out. If you think the labs have it handled, keep your tokens. If you think the next system card will read like the last three, burn some. 0x2bf8ce7d31f5856aca4bd8d4e3a99e336a0c1e18
