The good old days 😭

The door creaked open. A woman stepped inside, damp from the rain, wearing a navy blue jacket that matched the one in the closet exactly. She looked at me the way you look at a mirror that's a few years out of sync. "Hi," she said softly. "It's been a while."

I backed toward the window. "What do you mean I'm not supposed to remember?" He rubbed his face like he was exhausted. Like this was a conversation he'd had before. "Sit down," he said. "Please. I'll explain everything." I didn't sit down.....

The doorknob started to turn. I grabbed the photo off the table and backed against the wall. "Who's out there?" I asked, barely able to breathe the words out. He looked at me with something between fear and relief. "I think you already know," he said.....

Behind him, I heard footsteps on the porch. Slow. Deliberate. Like someone who knew exactly where to step to avoid the creaky boards. My husband's face went white. "She's not supposed to be here yet," he whispered.....

He wouldn't look at me. "There wasn't a body to bury," he finally said. "Not one whole enough to be sure." I felt sick. "So you buried an empty casket and told me my sister died, and let me believe it for four years?" "I told you what the doctors said to tell you......

The date on the back of the photo was four years ago. The same week my sister supposedly died. "You and Claire were in the car together," he said. "Only one of you walked away without a scratch." My stomach dropped. "Then who's in the ground?....

The accident" — I hadn't heard those words directed at me in years. My husband never talks about it. Ever. "What accident?" I said. "I've never been in an accident." He reached into his jacket and pulled out a photo I'd never seen. Me. In a hospital bed. Bandaged.....

"What is that supposed to mean?" I was shouting now. He flinched, glanced at the door like someone might hear. "After the accident," he said, "you weren't the only one who survived. But you were the only one who forgot." The room felt like it was tilting....

"There's someone else who stays here," he said. "Her name is Claire." My blood went cold. That's my sister's name. My sister who died four years ago. "Claire is dead," I said. "I watched them lower her casket." He shook his head slowly. "That's what you were told to remember.....

The old man made the same phone call every Friday... For five years. He always dialed the same number. He always smiled. And he always said, "I'll see you soon." One Friday, a new cashier couldn't hold back her curiosity. "Who do you call every week?" The old man smiled. "My wife." The cashier looked confused. "But... no one's answering." "I know," he replied. "She passed away five years ago." The cashier stood there in silence. "Then... why do you still call?" The old man looked at the phone one last time. "Because I promised her that no matter where life took us... I'd never let a Friday pass without saying I'd see her soon." He ended the call... Slipped the phone back into his pocket... And quietly walked away. Some promises don't end... Even when someone is gone.

I nodded politely, got into my car, and drove away without slowing down.
