This incident occurred in 2004 off the coast of Whangārei, New Zealand, when lifeguard Rob Howes was swimming with his teenage daughter, Niccy, and two other lifeguards.🐬🐬🐬 Without warning, a pod of bottlenose dolphins began circling the group, swimming tightly around them and repeatedly slapping the water with their tails. At first, the swimmers were confused, but after about 40 minutes, Howes spotted a 10-foot great white shark just outside the dolphins' protective ring. Marine biologists believe dolphins sometimes mob sharks to protect their own calves, and they may also extend that defensive behavior to humans in certain situations. By staying close together and aggressively splashing the water, the dolphins likely discouraged the shark from approaching. Eventually, the shark lost interest and swam away, allowing the dolphins to disperse
