At this point, it's as if Hamas is begging the Israeli military for more attacks against civilians in Gaza. They launched two totally useless rockets toward Tel Aviv; one fell inside Gaza, and the other fell off the coast of the Israeli city. Despite the blurring of the launch segment of the video, it is easy to tell that it took place from a civilian neighborhood in Khan Younis, southern Gaza. While the group is trying to send a statement that it is still able to “put up a fight” ahead of the August 15thnegotiations, they are stubbornly insisting on continuing with the reckless and criminal endangerment of the Palestinian people in Gaza. This is not “resistance”. It is suicidal, evil nihilism that’s holding 2.3 million people hostage to a futile and desperate attempt to hold onto power instead of ending the bloodshed and pursuing all means necessary to stop the war. If you still support Hamas or have any doubt about the true extent of their harm and damage to the Palestinian national project, there is still time to change course and truly register how they are serving the Palestinian people on a silver platter to Netanyahu’s government which will use this incident to justify more attacks and strikes that kill innocent civilians.

This is a very big deal. The Associated Press has done what journalists and news organizations covering the war in Gaza should have months ago: a deep dive into Hamas's casualty figures. And whaddaya know – they don't add up. The AP analysis shows that Hamas claims about both the overall number of casualties and the proportion of women and children among the total are contradicted by Hamas's own data, which is itself based on a mishmash of sources, all of which lead back to the terrorist group itself. For example, although Hamas claims that two-thirds of all the casualties have been women and children, the AP's analysis of Hamas's own data shows that, as recently as the end of April, the actual proportion was about half – a civilian casualty ratio of approximately 1:1 that is both among the lowest in the history of modern urban warfare and wholly consistent with Israel's claims since the start of the war. In addition, Hamas itself acknowledges that its overall figure of roughly 34,600 war casualties includes nearly 10,000—29% of the total—who are curiously "unidentified," suggesting that the ratio may be even less convenient for the terrorist group than the data it does disclose shows. Why does this matter? Because every accusation against Israel—from allegations of "disproportionate force" to the grave charge of "genocide"—is based on these Hamas numbers, which we now know to be, at best, completely unreliable and, at worst, wildly inflated. In point of fact, the AP analysis disproves those very allegations, suggesting that Israel is going to unprecedented lengths to target terrorists while protecting Palestinian civilians – exactly as it says it does. While every civilian death is a tragedy that should be avoided to the extent possible, the fact that Israel has managed to keep the civilian casualty ratio so low—far lower than what other Western militaries have achieved in less complex wartime environments—is a testament to Israel's remarkable battlefield ethics and to the tremendous professionalism of its soldiers and commanders. This analysis—which corroborates what statisticians and researchers have been saying for months—should change the conversation about Israel's war against Hamas in Gaza, marshalling support for the Israeli military's admirable conduct against a cruel adversary that cynically uses its own population as a human shield and enabling Israel to eradicate that foe while continuing to keep civilian casualties strikingly low. I can’t believe I have to explain what’s happening here, but here goes. Elite students of Ivy League schools have glamorized oppression so much that they have now reached role play status to satisfy their fantasies. Here, the students have appropriated the suffering of Gazans and are cosplaying as living through humanitarian crisis. In their American make-believe story where Ivy League infrastructure sets the scene, the students play Gazans and the school administration plays Israel. Israel (the school) is blocking their “basic humanitarian aid” in this play, and if they don’t receive it soon, they will “die of thirst and starvation” (appropriating exact experiences of Gazans). They also destroy upper class buildings and claim them as “liberated” while the students repeat chants in zombie-like chorus, playing the roll of “freedom fighters” destroying Israeli infrastructure and claiming them freed. If I’m alive in a world where people don’t see the levels of perversion in this, I give up. You don’t see this in lower tier schools from kids of lower socio-economic standing because they aren’t plagued with the guilt of privilege that they’re seeking to launder through Middle East role plays of feigned suffering. This is as first world dystopia as it gets. Meanwhile, these Ivy League students who can have much more than a glass of water and as much food as their stomachs can take are commanding the attention of the media and the entire American audience, while actual Gazans who need humanitarian aid are ignored. I still have to pinch myself that people don’t see this.

I’m a scholar of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and a longtime advocate for peace and for Palestinian rights. I have publicly opposed Israel’s occupation of the West Bank, and its blockade and now destruction of Gaza. I support the rights of students and faculty to peacefully protest against Israel, including by establishing protest encampments, such as the one on my campus at UCLA. I do not want these protest camps to be removed by the police, whose propensity for unnecessary and excessive use of force is well-established. As a Jew, I do not personally feel threatened or unsafe because of the protest encampment at UCLA. I know some of the students taking part and believe they are well-intentioned. Many, probably most, of the protesters are simply horrified by the mass killing and near-famine in Gaza and want it to end. So do I. But I cannot join this protest because it is not just a protest against the war in Gaza. Among the demands of the protest organizers is the demand to “sever all UC-wide connections to Israeli universities, including study abroad programs, fellowships, seminars, and research collaborations, and UCLA’s Nazarian Center.” Needless to say, I oppose the demand to boycott the Nazarian Center, which I direct. The Center is devoted to the academic study of Israel and has no ties to the Israeli government. I also oppose boycotting Israeli academic institutions and academic boycotts in general. But it isn’t only the demands of the protest organizers that I have a problem with. One of the organizations behind the protest, Students for Justice in Palestine, has expressed support for Hamas and has even celebrated the massacre of Israelis on October 7. Being in solidarity with Palestinians does not necessitate supporting Hamas. On the contrary, Hamas oppresses Palestinians and has no concern for the lives of Palestinian civilians in Gaza. They have openly stated that they are willing to sacrifice countless Palestinian lives—“martyrs”—for their cause, which is the ultimate eradication of Israel. They have spent billions building a vast underground network to protect themselves and their weaponry, but they haven’t built a single bomb shelter for Gazan civilians or sheltered them in their tunnels. They are prolonging the devastating war in Gaza, and the humanitarian crisis there, in order to maintain their power and authoritarian rule in Gaza. I know that many people in the pro-Palestinian movement don’t support Hamas and don’t praise the October 7 massacre, but groups like SJP lead the movement on many college campuses, exploiting the sympathy that many students rightly feel for the suffering of Palestinians. Students and faculty demonstrating in support of Palestinians shouldn’t ignore the fact that the organizers of these demonstrations are, in many cases, ideologically committed to eradicating Israel and expelling Israeli Jews, supportive of violence against Israeli civilians, and willing to ignore or even justify Hamas’ strategy of sacrificing Palestinian civilians for their political ends.
