Mira Murati (@miramurati), the OpenAI CTO who left OpenAI two years ago, founded her own company, Thinking Machines Lab which was valued at $12 billion in July 2025. They have finally shipped - Inkling, a multimodal AI model. Trained entirely from scratch and available for free download (though your PC can't run it ofcourse). Inkling is basically a mixture of models. Only a portion of the network activates for given input. It has 975 billion total prameters. The full weights are on Hugging Face under an Apache 2.0 license. It's being called a "well rounded, generalist" model, while the Chinese models still have the edge, developers who needed an alternative to Chinese models now really have it.
So Scarf (@scarf_oss) is moving new API development from Haskell to Python because waiting for Haskell's compiler to typecheck AI-generated changes slows iteration. Compilation times have become the bottleneck. What do you think about this trade off between Type safety vs Iteration speed?
