I feel compelled to stand in defense of this intelligent old man, insulted from every corner for the offense of holding a single opinion. The man was there. None of you critics were. At 94, most of us would count ourselves fortunate to still recall the names of our own wives. Now, on the main issue. First, I believe that no black man, dead or alive has championed the cause of African independence the way Nkrumah did. Like I always say, he's the most prolific evangelist of black freedom. But an evangelist is not the same thing as a saint, and history has a way of separating the two. You can preach the gospel with total conviction and still fail to enter the kingdom you promised. That, in essence, is the story of Nkrumah. 1. Nkrumah did not deliver independence to Ghana. Ghanaians delivered it to themselves, and the machinery for that delivery was already in motion before he returned home. The Coussey Committee, convened well ahead of independence, drafting the constitutional framework under which Nkrumah would later govern under. 2. Consider, too, the action of Sir Charles Arden Clarke, who held power at the time Nkrumah sat in prison. Arden extended Nkrumah the one thing history rarely offered any black colony, which was the chance to prove, in full view of the world, that the Black man could govern his own affairs. What followed is a matter of record. 3. Yes, Nkrumah was a communist. He was a disciple of Karl Marx. Karl Marx was an extremely clever man who thought he did not need to work. Lazy Karl Marx who was against private ownership was living in the house of Engels, whose father owned a factory. Ironic, isn't it? Guess what, Nkrumah too never sustained any meaningful job for a year. 4. No president of Ghana has ever inherited what Nkrumah inherited. He inherited a clean sheet. He took office with £200million in reserve, some £6billion in today's money, equal to a quarter of Ghana's entire 2026 budget, and this was for a population of just 6.7 million, against the 38 million Ghana carries now. Nkrumah began his presidency holding, in relative terms, what we are spending this year, without debt, without currency volatility, without galamsey, and with a vibrant with faith that he would first save Ghana, then Africa. By 1966, when the coup came, Ghana owed £600 million, roughly £15 billion today. 5. Nkrumah did not build KNUST, nor the long list of other monuments credited to him by admirers. 6. If the British built infrastructure for their own benefit, did they leave with those infrastructure? I would wish for a President of Ghana who got pissed by traffic and constructed railway lines across the country for his own benefit. 7. CIA did not kill Nkrumah. Nkrumah died of cancer in Romania. 8. Africa's problem is not because of colonialism. Britain colonized close to a third of all the earth. Ladies and gentlemen, when we stop deifying men and women who have been put in power to serve this nation, the paradigm will begin to shift. Respectfully!
