OpenAI Agents API vs Claude Managed Agents. Pick the fence, not the logo. Both sell a managed harness (loop, sessions, tools). For a one-person shop I care about this sheet more than the brand: 1. Where compute runs (hosted / partner / yours) 2. What is stored server-side (sessions, files, memory) 3. Tool allowlist you can audit 4. HITL pause / resume exists 5. Budget / session cap 6. Action log exportable 7. Kill / archive / delete path 8. Zero Data Retention reality (read the docs — both are stateful by design) 9. One job to prove it this week 10. Kill-or-promote date on the calendar Model shopping is cheap. Rebuilding permissions is not. Save the comparison checklist.

Models that resist shutdown are a lab story. Your kill switch is an ops story. While the feed argues about Amodei's interviews, a solo firm still needs this written: 1. Kill switch location (one sentence) 2. Who can pull it 3. What stops immediately vs what drains 4. Action audit you can replay after 5. Client message template if something went wrong 6. Test the kill path once this month 7. No L2+ (send / pay) until the kill path is real 8. Calendar reminder: re-test after any harness upgrade Fear posts do not protect clients. A tested stop button does. Save this before the next autonomy demo.

I will let an agent draft. I will not let it send. Rule I write before any client workflow: 1. Retrieval — agent may pull 2. Draft — agent may write 3. Send / refund / price — human only 4. Audit — every action logged 5. Offline plan — who covers if I am asleep 6. Kill switch — disable in under a minute Automation without a send fence is just faster regret. Reply with the one action you would never automate.

Stop collecting AI tools. Keep 4 files. For a one-person practice I would rather have these than another subscription: 1. Offers.md — what you sell, what you refuse, price band 2. Clients.md — who is active, next action, risk 3. Playbooks.md — how a job actually gets done, step by step 4. Agent-permissions.md — what each agent may touch When the tool changes, the files stay. Save this if you are building a practice, not a stack.

Proactive agents are shipping. Solo firms need a "may not act" list first. Meta Muse and friends will book, email, and pay. Cool for consumers. Risky for a one-person practice until this exists: 1. What it may observe 2. What it may draft 3. What it may schedule 4. What it may never touch (refunds, pricing, legal) 5. Who reviews within what window 6. What happens if you are offline 7. Action audit you can replay 8. Kill switch tested once, not theorized Propose → route → human enforces. If you cannot name the apology owner, do not turn on proactive mode. Bookmark for when the next "acts for you" launch hits.

MCP tools without always_ask is how solos get surprise sends. Before I wire any MCP tool into a live agent: 1. Name the tool in plain English 2. Write what success looks like in one line 3. Default: always_ask on write / send / delete 4. Allowlist the exact endpoints — no "*" 5. Log every call with timestamp + args summary 6. Cap retries (idempotency > hope) 7. Human gate if the tool can move money or email 8. Dry-run once on a fake client file 9. Kill path: disable the connector in under 60 seconds 10. @elonmusk Peer review between labs only works if the eval suite and red-team prompts are shared, not just a polite look at the weights. Otherwise it is theater. Publish the failure cases, not the handshake photo.

@guilleflorvs Vertical depth beats another thin foundation-model wrapper. ElevenLabs won by owning voice end to end, not by chasing every modality. The constraint of what you refuse to build is the strategy.

@milesdeutscher Zero-person shops fail at taste, not throughput. The hire that matters is the person who can reject 90% of agent output without rewriting it from scratch. Skills compress. Curation does not.

@garrytan Public content is distribution. The scarce thing is still judgment on one company at one moment. That asymmetry is why office hours compound and threads do not replace them.

@petergyang @pedroh96 @brexHQ Job, skills, manager, budget is the right abstraction. Open-ended agents feel powerful in a demo and then leak context across five half-finished tasks. Sell the completed work product, not another chat that can do anything.

@levelsio @ycombinator Harness startups only win if the frontier labs refuse to ship a good enough generic one. Hardware has a real moat because atoms do not get cloned in a prompt. Most software pitches now are thin wrappers on someone else's model.

@Thom_Wolf 4B at 4-bit that can run the full agent loop locally is the real milestone. Chat demos are cheap. Tool use that stays private on-device is the product people will actually trust with keys and inboxes.
