Labor sold these CGT changes to the population as a “housing affordability” measure. Yet the biggest guaranteed outcome is an extra $43 billion flowing to Treasury. Forgive my cynicism, but if the real objective was affordable housing, they could have tackled the demand side by reducing permanent migration to around 130,000 a year while accelerating new housing supply. Instead, Australians get yet another tax grab by an unimaginative and lazy labor government. It’s extremely difficult to avoid the conclusion that Canberra’s priority is protecting their spending habits. Every new tax seems to fund another selective grant program, subsidy or bureaucracy rather than addressing the structural causes of the housing crisis in this country. Australians deserve honesty. If this is primarily about raising revenue, say so Jim. Don’t pretend it’s a housing policy while continuing on with policies that keep demand elevated.

There was no new law passed, no vote in Parliament, and no public debate about this move. It was just a heavy threat that feels like it’s meant to scare people away from asking tough questions in the first place. What they might not have expected is how closely the public and politicians from different sides are now watching this unfold.

My friend who used to work for Centrelink said lots of Somalians & other refugees who could not get Australian Citizenship would often become NZ Citizens & then move to Australia. The NZ passport became the pathway to Australian residence/citizenship.
