Pensar en 2026. Masivo, bro.
Nvidia's potential takeover of Hugging Face is alarming! Hugging Face is to open source AI what GitHub is/was to open source code. It hosts millions of models, datasets, and demos. Researchers from Google, Meta, Mistral, and countless independent labs publish there. It's a natural ground and now NVIDIA is looking set to buy it for more than $13 billion. If the deal goes through, the implications are significant. NVIDIA sells the chips that AI models run on. Owning the platform where those models live gives it visibility into every research trend, every emerging architecture, and every workload before competitors do. That is an enormous competitive advantage. And it is only natural to compare it with Microsoft's acquisition of GitHub. Microsoft bought GitHub in 2018 and mostly left it alone. The open source community stayed on GitHub. But Microsoft did not sell the servers GitHub ran on. NVIDIA does sell the hardware AI runs on. The incentive to steer the ecosystem toward CUDA and away from open alternatives like ROCm is always there. More than anything, it's the "trust" that is at risk. AMD, Intel, and Qualcomm all benefit from Hugging Face's neutrality today. The moment NVIDIA owns it, every other chipmaker has to decide whether to keep publishing there or build alternatives. That would lead to fragmentation of open source AI hub.
Omarchy is not going to adopt a formal Code of Conduct because those turned out to be struggle-session processes in the last turning. But we are going to play nice. We're going to be courteous, professional, and composed in our direct interactions with users, competitors, and even haters. Because that's what's going to pave the path to the win. That does not mean we have to act as vendors. Nobody is entitled to anyone else's free time or volunteer contributions. And we're not going to tolerate people who act like entitled customers buying a service contract from a company. Because we don't sell one, and we aren't one. This is going to be difficult sometimes. Because people are unreasonable! Especially on the internet! But if you return fire with fire, the only thing that'll burn is our reputation. The troll who triggered you into flashing your teeth won't face any consequences, but every spectator who saw it will judge you. I'm not going to tell you how to act anywhere else. You don't owe this organization a suit-and-tie demeanor at all times either. It's fine to be quirky, irreverent, silly, and even occasionally get upset. You do you. But when you're engaging with our fast-growing community, please keep these thoughts in mind. That's how we play nice but win. --- Posted this to the fast-growing Omarchy army of volunteers on our internal Basecamp.
Omarchy is blowing up. I've never been involved with anything in my career that has grown this fast. With Ruby on Rails, we had years to build solid institutions, teams, and relationships. With Omarchy, we've been forced to figure it all out in twelve days. It's exhausting, but also incredibly exciting. It was never sustainable with just Ryan and me running everything. That's how it was, more or less, up until Quattro. Lots of other contributors, but all the responsibility was on us to make sure the ship stayed afloat, the servers didn't crash, and fixes got pushed out quickly. Now it's time to build a proper institution. Durable, resilient, and competent. That's what we're doing here on Basecamp now. I'm spinning up teams for every facet of responsible distro management, and I'm getting an absolute outpouring of interest for all of them. Everyone wants to be part of this. We're winning hearts, minds, and volunteers at an astounding rate. Great! We need all of it to succeed. Because make no mistake: There are many people who'd love to see this rocket blow up before it reaches the moon. Aggrieved Linux users who don't like the sudden attention their exclusive hobby has received. Competing Linux distributions that are seeing our numbers explode. Mac stans who've sunk their identity into an apple. And, of course, any of the haters I've picked up in my quarter-century career speaking bluntly on the internet. They're not going to succeed. Because we've already become unstoppable. There's too much momentum, too much money, and too much support now backing this effort. We're living the Mandate From Heaven meme at the moment. And we are here to fulfill the prophecy: The Year of Linux on the Desktop! That has been a joke for two decades. But by the end of the year, nobody at Apple or Microsoft is going to be laughing. They're going to be scrambling. Because neither of these proud organizations currently has any method to counter the speed, vision, or ambition with which we're going to accelerate into the future of personal computing. This is the moment. This is the opening. This is our chance. For thirty years, we've been subject to one OS overlord or another. Dictating how we compute. Choking off competitors through platform malfeasance. Tollboothing the distribution. That ends now. Because Linux is going to win. And Linux is free. As in beer, speech, and source. But just because it's inevitable doesn't mean it's going to be easy. We have a lot of work in front of us if we actually want to make our mark. But there's never been a better time for this kind of delusional ambition. The age of agents is the unlocking factor. It sounds like a LinkedIn slogan, but it's true. Where the application of tokens goes, the innovation follows. We can fix everything. Let's do it together. Let's go. --- This is what I sent to the dozens of new volunteers who've signed up for teams within the new Omarchy organization yesterday. But we might as well broadcast our mission and intentions to the world too.
Stop this hate on Omarchy.

From time to time I get emails with questions related to Linux and linux-insides. Recently, more and more often I get the same question: Why am I still spending time and efforts on this, considering that one can just ask an llm and get a fast answer? Ehhh... I will try to answer it here once, so I can refer to it next time. I started writing linux-insides many years ago. LLMs did not exist yet. I was curious. I was deeply interested in how things work. I wanted to know. For me, it was never only about getting an answer. It was not like this back then, and it is not like this now. I am an engineer. I like to read source code. I like to write source code. I like trying to understand the author's way of thinking, getting confused, trying again, and finally having this feeling "hey, now I see what it means". I do not fully understand recent claims like "writing code manually does not make sense anymore" or "the era of humans writing code is over". For me it is not over. I like to write code manually. I like to read code myself. I still have a lot of fun doing it. An LLM is a great tool. It has simplified my professional life a lot. Yes, it can answer a question. It can write code faster than me, and sometimes better than me. Probably it can also explain things better than me. But it does not discourage me from doing what I like to do. The point is not only to get the answer. The point is to learn, to go deeper, to slowly make things clear for yourself, and of course enjoy the process. Have fun doing what you like to do. Do not let anyone convince you that your curiosity is obsolete.
Windows is borrowing so much from Linux that the only thing missing is the Linux kernel.
At this rate, Windows 12 is going to be a Linux distro.

I don't understand people's obsession with watching tutorials in videos format. What I can read in a minute, takes 5 minutes to watch. Not to mention that revisiting a section is extremely tedious in video. I guess I must be getting old.
The reason agents are so good at Linux is that all 40 million lines of kernel code was part of the pre training. Along with every other open source dependency. This really does make every obscure error message shallow, and the system completely malleable.
This past Thursday, I spent the morning at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the DC Circuit. I was there to hear the arguments in my lawsuit against Pete Hegseth for violating my First Amendment rights. I appreciate that the court made this case a priority because it has a significant impact on the First Amendment rights of over 2 million retired servicemembers. This case matters. Let me tell you what also matters. Right now, we have servicemembers putting their lives at risk because this President took our country to war against Iran without a strategic goal or a plan. Because of his reckless decision, parents can’t afford the gas to drive their kids to school, people can’t afford to drive to work and seniors can’t afford to drive to their doctor’s appointments. Millions of Americans can’t afford rent, healthcare, and in many cases food. As this President builds his new gilded ballroom, upgrades his new plane, builds his arch, and works on his next business deal that personally enriches him and his family, the American people continue to suffer. I didn’t vote for Donald Trump but after he was elected I wanted him to succeed and I hoped that as President he would at least try to make some things better. Instead he kicked millions of Americans off of their healthcare and took away free lunches for kids in order to deliver a tax cut to millionaires and billionaires. And recently Donald Trump has asked Congress for $1.5 trillion for next year's defense budget. That is more than double of what it was in my first year in the Senate just 5 years ago. It is nearly the amount that all other countries combined spend on defense. And this is for a department that is being managed by the least qualified secretary of defense in our country’s history. Where will this money go? Some of it will be used to fund the President’s top priorities like Golden Dome, an idea that Donald Trump, a real estate developer, had after seeing the success of Israel’s Iron Dome system, which is essentially a point defense system. That’s very different than what he envisions, which is a shield against all ballistic and hypersonic missiles. I understand the physics of the challenge of intercepting hypersonic missiles in space or in the glide phase and it looks like they will spend hundreds of billions of dollars building a system that will not work. And even worse some of this money will certainly go to companies that Donald Trump’s sons have recently invested in. The corruption in and around this President and his friends and family is almost unimaginable in its scale and scope. We have real problems that are being ignored and others that aren’t being addressed with a reasonable and rational approach. The top 1% of the wealthiest Americans now own more of our collective wealth than the middle class and if you are in the middle class you often can’t afford your life because this President and others in Washington DC have passed laws to give your money to them. It didn’t start with this President, but my hope is that perhaps it ends with him. We have to get this country back on track. We have to pass policies that help hard working Americans so that their hard work pays off for them, not for someone else. We have to address our country’s growing debt and we have to find solutions that will improve people's lives. Whether it is the outrageous cost of health care or the fact that young people can’t afford homes and young families can’t afford childcare — there are solutions to these problems. Corruption, cronyism, and a system designed to help the very few at the expense of the many is a significant challenge but it isn’t an insurmountable one.
