People laughed when told this was in the infrastructure bill. Thomas Massie tried to get it removed. Even proposed separate legislation to remove it. It should not just be removed as a mandatory feature, but should be made illegal. Obviously. Nobody wants this. Nobody needs it. It WILL be used for ill.

This Independence Day, we celebrate 250 years of the enduring ideals upon which our Republic was founded. Exactly 50 years after the signing of the Declaration of Independence, Thomas Jefferson and John Adams—two of its greatest architects—passed away on July 4, 1826, just hours apart. Once fierce political rivals, they reconciled late in life through the encouragement of Benjamin Rush, a Founding Father whose contributions to our nation are too often overlooked. Their restored friendship reminds us that our shared devotion to the American experiment is greater than our political differences. As we commemorate our nation's 250th year, may we renew our commitment to the self-evident truths proclaimed in the Declaration of Independence: that our rights come from our Creator, that government exists to secure those rights, and that the rule of law—not the rule of men—must guide our Republic. Today America turns 250. Before the fireworks, a word about the birth certificate. Eric Metaxas, in his book “Revolution,” put it well: “Indeed, the Declaration of Independence is essentially the birth certificate of America, so to focus on that mostly pro forma document while we forget the woman in whose womb the child gestated, and whose painful labor brought that child into the world, is a kind of willful madness. We must understand that before there was any need for a document publicly declaring that America had chosen independence, there was the prolonged and difficult labor of the effort toward independence itself.” New Hampshire knows this better than anyone. By July 4, 1776, the Granite State was already six months into self-government. On January 5, 1776, in Exeter, our Provincial Congress adopted the first constitution in America, replacing royal rule with a government built on the consent of the governed. First in the nation, as usual. And the labor started long before that. The Pine Tree Riot in Weare came first, back in 1772, when Granite Staters decided the King’s men had no business telling them which trees they could cut on their own land. Three years later came Lexington and Concord, nearly 15 months before the Declaration was signed, and NH militiamen were there, carrying powder they’d liberated from Fort William and Mary. 250 years later the lesson holds: liberty is not granted by governments. It is claimed by people willing to do the hard, unglamorous labor of self-government, and defended by people willing to tell tyrants, whether they sit in London or closer to home, no.
