I had two babies. With the first, I had a Scottish midwife, Fiona, whose deep kindness and gentle voice stays with me 30 years later. With my second, I had two African agency nurses with poor English. They clearly regarded me as a white wimp when I asked for exactly the same pain relief I’d had after my previous C-section. One yanked out my catheter. They were awful. Culturally so harsh and different to Fiona. It’s completely natural when you are in hospital feeling vulnerable to want sympathetic nurses who speak English. They can be any colour or religion but their sensibility must be British. Filipina nurses I have met are exceptional. Importing thousands of cheap nurses from alien cultures when so many of our own girls want to be midwives has been a calamity.

Never forget what Starmer said. Police in riot gear raided my home. They arrived with a key and a saw at the ready. My 16-year-old son was handcuffed while I was detained in a room as officers searched the entire property from top to bottom. He was arrested solely for being present at the protest. In the same town, my 12-year-old daughter was groomed, raped, beaten and died. Despite an admission of guilt, the perpetrator was only requested to attend a voluntary interview. This is two-tier policing in practice.
