Both of my books (and my next) have been written in fits and starts. Can't speak for everyone, but if you are beating yourself up about not having a good writing routine, this thread may reassure you.

I can’t believe I’m actually writing this. The North Atlantic sea surface temperature has been at record warm levels for an entire year now, setting daily record highs every day for 365 consecutive days and counting. Yes, you read that right.
