When @ARPA_H Program Manager Captain James Coburn visited Ginkgo for the start of Year 2 of the WHEAT program, Ginkgo CEO @jrkelly walked him through Catalyst — the software that runs our autonomous lab, Nebula. Every box in Catalyst is a step in a protocol mapped to a real piece of hardware on the lab floor. Drop in a node, connect it to the next, and the robots know that this plate needs to go to that device, get sealed, get spun, come out the other side. It's how the science for the WHEAT program — turning wheat cell machinery into a domestic source for pharmaceutical ingredients — actually gets done. When the U.S. government needed a way to secure our medical supply chains, Ginkgo proposed the WHEAT project, which was selected by ARPA-H. We are taking the biological machinery inside an agricultural wheat cell and using Nebula—our autonomous lab—to create a resilient, domestic source for pharmaceuticals. To mark the start of Year 2, ARPA-H Portfolio Lead, Captain James Coburn, visited Ginkgo and saw Nebula in action. In this video, you see the successful production of "green fluorescent protein" in a wheat germ system. It’s a critical milestone demonstrating an observable increase in protein production compared to other commercially available wheat cell free systems and is a step on the way to building complex biological products that were previously only possible in massive overseas factories.
