Ok let’s just deal with the big numbers here so everyone can find themselves. 4 billion litres of water sure sounds like a lot, right? Wrong. Cape Town uses almost 400 billion litres of water annually. So this is 1% of usage, except it’s not because data centres need water in the same way a car needs water to keep cool. You seldom need to top the water up unless you have a leak - same here. In fact if you do a back of envelope calculation you’ll find that even in a bad rainfall year you’d be able to harvest 25 million litres of water off of the roof of such a structure. In a good one that number is closer to 60 million litres - more than enough to top up the system to account for losses. Ok but surely one third of all of Cape Town’s electricity is a lot? Yeah, it is except nobody building a data centre is going to rely on Eskom to power sensitive data which has to have an uptime of 100% and near zero risk of loss. Anyone building such infrastructure is going to rely on their own power generation and storage with Eskom as a backup not a primary source. This is not specific to South Africa either - globally data centres are being built in this way. As it happens all human development uses resources and “damages” the environment depending on how you view that term. Funny thing is you never see these arguments made against public transport or sports stadiums all of which use tons of water/electricity and change the environment. It’s only private sector development which gets the ire of people like this. We would all be well advised to remember Thomas Sowell’s quote when considering such issues ~ “there are no solutions, only trade offs”.

I don’t agree with this take and here’s why; - Remgro already owned 50% of Mediclinic and has for years. The other 50% owner was MSC with whom management was split 50:50. So it’s gone from two large private entities owning the group down to just the one. Not exactly some big change. - The majority of Mediclinic’s revenue comes from outside of South Africa (>70%) mostly from the Swiss and Middle Eastern businesses. This deal effectively gives MSC full ownership of the Swiss operation while Remgro gets the same for the SA Mediclinic and associated footprint. Co-ownership of the Middle East and UK businesses continue. - Rupert likely sees huge potential in healthcare growth in South Africa under the assumption that NHI is dead in the water, and knowing we will have luke warm growth for the next 10-15 years - something he would be privy to as someone who is involved in the ‘autopilot’ project set out for the country. - Should NHI come to fruition nobody in the private sector will have leverage. In fact that’s the stated point of the NHI - it removes all leverage and power from private healthcare actors be they corporate or individual. You should take some solace in the fact that Rupert sees this as highly unlikely.
