Your interviews with Smith and Sozstack are of great interest - they will inform any future discussion we might have. I am looking forward to it. For myself, in the 1970s, with an interest in the science and sociology of the new field of interactive media, I began interrogating the future much as you are doing today. My question then was "how can humans use and value (interactive) information." Over time, I branded my field as infonomics and expanded to include all life forms. My work now is to create a common and demonstrable definition of information and a bridge from the thermodynamics of Smith to the biology of Levin and on to distributed life forms from sexual reproduction to human societies. AI has brought this topic to the forefront. You are asking the right questions. It would be fun to share some ideas. BTW, I will be introducing the full theory at the Constructal Law conference in Paris in October (CLC2026). After that I will make the monograph available.

Yes, both humans and information machines (from the light switch on) process information using the same base algorithm. As our information machines have matured (somewhat), we are seeing that the algorithm is the same, just in different substrates. While digital intelligence is stuck with primitive 1/0 one dimensional "language" biology uses multi-dimensonal molecular languages (e.g. kinases docking with proteins) that communicate using shape, charge, position, etc. That's why it takes a huge data center to simulate the 20W human brain. Many humans in fact seem to operate on a lot less than 20W... This is the theory of Infonomics, which I will be presenting formally in October.

The universe has configuration but not information. Michael, by different paths, our ideas have converged at the same destination. Life uniquely creates information and all of life is hierarchical myriads of rigourously definable thermodynamic "infonomic engines," your thoughtforms. Your work provides the emperical proof of an information physics hypothesis stated in 1980, the Theory of Infonomics, presentation in October. Next stop, elucidating the realistic pathways by which life emerged from the "abiotic" universe. Is there a universal semantics that is baked into the structure of the universe?

We can argue about the semantics, but DNA by itself is just the storage subsystem that instantiates a cascade of biological information processors, as Levin has demonstated in spades. That said, who determins what is "correct." Even at birth, genomes contain bags of defects. Epigenetic development works around these. Yes, over time errors pile up, but how far back do you or can you restore? That is why skeptics point out that what works in short lived mice is more problematic in humans. We all want it to work, but beware the law of unintended consequences.

Michael, thanks to your work, clearly molecular biology is the syntax of a multidimensional information semantics. I wonder if we could attack the problem by vectorizing physics interactions whose dot products would lead to molecular structure and the more complex semantics of bioelectricity as you are discovering. In short, is there a universal semantics that runs from in inorganic into and through biology to human consciousness and now to AI? I think we also need to think of the dimensions as dynamic algorithms not just as floating point numbers.

The question is, how do you define an error in a multidimensional molecular semantics of biology and then there is the question of irreducible computation posed by Stephen Wolfram. Once you scramble an egg, it’s literally impossible to unscramble it. As we age would become increasingly scrambled.

Well said. Biologist seem unable to reconcile that information has fundamentally a thermodynamic process. Or understand SHANNON was solving a communication problem, and that his solution is designed for bits, the most primitive possible form of information and does not address semantics of the languages involved. Despite all their success, there was one eternal question the Savants could never answer - why? What’s the meaning of all this?
