Of course what people say is important but that was not what was found in a double blind RCT, linked above (from academics sponsored by drug manufacturers). It is not what is found in multiple surveys of people. I also expect there is a difference in timing. For some people the relief of numbing early on is very welcome. Down the track this is less so the case.

Although there has generally been a slight increase each year in prescribing of antidepressants in England, the number of new prescriptions has been dropping the last several years. Citalopram on left. There is a similar pattern for sertraline but not to the same degree (right). These 2 antidepressants account for more than half of all prescriptions in England. Hard to know if this is down from a covid peak or is a longer trend (the data here goes back to 2020). Link to database below.

It's unfortunate that Morgan is terminally unoriginal. If only her story were an exception that could be put down to some sort of personality defect then we wouldn't have such a disquieting problem on our hands of widespread neurological withdrawal injuries from such a commonly used class of drugs.

Here's a study showing emotional blunting effects in healthy volunteers given antidepressants so no need to try to pin it on patients being untrustworthy narrators of their own experience: pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/36683090/ Also if you ever lecture to the public try telling them that antidepressants are not emotionally numbing - you will get a big laugh!

The @nytimes continues to miss the key issue in the story of SSRI withdrawal. @morgan_stewar tries to explain. I think it is true that 'protracted withdrawal', while it has become the default term, is misleading because it implies that re-instatement will work (it often doesn't) and that it is relatively short-lived, rather than the debilitating nervous system injury that it can so often be.

Sharing that your patients cold turkey SSRIs with no problems is dangerous. In an effort to debunk withdrawal info from the gov, drs/psychs are posting that their patients CT. Ppl get health info online and may assume they can CT too. HCPs have a responsibility on the internet.

I did a thing called 'going outside'. It is not a very big stretch of the imagination to understand that drugs for which you need a magnifying glass to distinguish from placebo on RCTs that go for 8 weeks and which have a host of a adverse effects are going to be net harmful for a lot of patients. The study I cited illustrates the bleeding obvious. You have supplied nothing that contradicts it, limitations aside.
