The poorest economies in the world are not achieving economic growth. The consequence is that progress against the very worst poverty is coming to a halt. This is one of the worst problems in the world today, but hardly gets any attention.

@ihoff1 @PikettyWIL Yes, I put this poorly. I didn’t mean to suggest that there is a direct connection between these sentences. I wanted to say that I am with him on big parts of his research and proposals. Especially the fear that very wealthy people have vast power over the rest of us.

Have a look at what the report says about inequality. The ratio of the top 0.001% to the bottom percentile is capped at a max of 5. Since the p1 can't be higher than 60k, the top income cannot be higher than 300k. And the proposal isn't focused on redistribution, which I think a shame. Also, of course Piketty's income is much, much higher than €60,000 per year. I think a reasonable estimate for his income from 'Capital' alone is somewhere between €5 and 10 million. And then he wrote other books. He is also one of the best paid professors in France. And he is promoted by the world's most prestigious speaker bureaus (and while Piketty doesn't disclose his fees publicly, Stiglitz asks for 50-100,000$ per talk aaespeakers.com/keynote-speake…. I think Piketty is perhaps a bit lower, but not much). Thomas Piketty is certainly having an annual income much more than 10-times the average that he is proposing for the rest of the country.

Thank you for answering questions Mr Piketty. I also have one. Like you, I also don’t want to live in a world where some are vastly richer than others and thereby have vast control over others. I’m with you on that. But I’m wondering how you are thinking about yourself in relation to your proposal. Given your work, I’d imagine you earn perhaps 500,000? Or given just how large your sales figures are, probably more? How do you square this with your proposal? Will you stop working as much so your salary goes down to 60,000? Or are you perhaps already giving away almost all your income?
