To mark the start of my @AbdnArtMuseums project transcribing all 50 yrs of diaries belonging to swashbuckling Scottish-American artist James McBey here’s an example of a coded entry he made in April 1913. It’s a mystery - unless you can crack the cypher! Which I can. Thankfully.

Your script is novelistic! Vs. Your script is… novelistic. Depending who you talk to novelistic screenplay writing is either a good thing or a bad thing. I’ve been skewered by coverage readers before for being novelistic. So novelistic as a compliment is… interesting.

Here are three character questions that changed my screenwriting: 1) What does the character THINK they want? This is who they are in Act 1. 2) What does the character REALLY want? This is who they are in Act 3. 3) What does the character FEAR? This is what keeps them from realizing the difference between the two. Answer these with genuine care, and you can outline an entire character journey.

Illustrious Aberdeenshire-born artist James McBey (whose works grace the walls of @AbdnArtMuseums) died OTD in Tangier, Morocco 65yrs ago. A Dec 1959 edition of the Tangier Gazette described the swashbuckling creative as “a striking personality whose wit & charm were legendary”.
