4/ Spent the week on real RSpec, on my actual 5-year-old production app — not toy examples. Hit real environment bugs, a couple of validation holes, and one Ruby/Selenium wall I had to name and move past. Full writeup: medium.com/@jamalamohamme…
3/ I would've sworn that field was protected. It wasn't — and the only reason I know that now is because I broke it on purpose and watched what actually happened. A validation existing in your code ≠ it catching the bug you assume it catches.
1/ Postgres doesn't treat two NULL values as duplicates of each other. I found that out by breaking my own app on purpose, during the first week I ever spent properly learning RSpec — after 10+ years of writing Rails with zero automated tests. #RubyOnRails
In my career, compilers have always generated better code that I ever could have. I find this to be increasingly so with contemporary AIs. But you know what neither can do better than me? Knowing what software to write, what shape it should take, and what I want it to do. The entire history of software engineering has been one of rising levels of abstraction. This is how it was, how it is now, and how it shall be in the fullness of time.
