Commander has a lot of juice, being more casual lets it be played over the internet despite the official digital clients. The tradeoff here is a completely normal choice for a game company to make. But don't let anyone tell you it wasn't a choice that was made.

One of the things the old Pro systems enabled, which Commander by and large is not doing, is incentivize people who are not local to each other, maybe even from other countries, to spend large amounts of time and money to play with and against each other regularly.

Pro Tours are a luxury hobby, fun to play once in a while, just simply not worth pursuing for anything more than personal accomplishment. IMO it’s def fine to aspire to that, but you’re not earning a living playing competitive mtg these days so temper your expectations.

@mattyglesias I mean, wikipedia isn't the final source, but 'States passed laws to make voter registration and electoral rules more restrictive, with the result that political participation by most black people and many poor white people began to decrease' seems on point here.

@SamuelHBlack @zdch There are spaces that are more resilient than others. For example, video game speedrunning is simultaneously obviously machine doable, there's a whole genre of TASers, and no matter how easy you make it, the context of the challenge for humans is to do it as humans.

@SamuelHBlack @zdch Yeah, there's probably an 'indie' influencer space where you can scrape out a living on authenticity. Lots of IRL events and stuff. But the big scale stuff... whuf. It's hard to see how that becomes much but enshittified algorithmic entertainment.

Somehow it was learning how many people are fulltime employed to maintain the Golden Gate Bridge that flipped something inside of me in my understanding of the entropic force civilization has to constantly fight against. Before that moment I thought — I had not applied real conscious thought — you simply build a building or anything really and then you just … have it. After that I understood everything is constantly at the brink of being lost.
