But as always, the most memorable parts of such meetings are often the personal anecdotes that have little to do with the business at hand. I learned that although the Minister played American football as a youngster in Canada, his grandfather, Clarence Skeete, was a Trinidadian all-rounder who represented Trinidad in West Indian first-class cricket. A little digging later revealed that Clarence was regarded as one of Trinidad’s leading cricketers of the immediate post-war era. So, despite never having played cricket himself, the Minister was well acquainted with the term googly; knowledge that could prove surprisingly useful in the world of international relations. 🙂
