Meet "Jimothy" the racoon, who is going viral in Ballard!
He has rare condition, but he's living his best life!
More on this cute guy this morning on @KIRONewsradio and @Mynorthwest
Jimothy the Raccoon – The True Story
Meet Jimothy, Seattle’s newest viral star.
Last Monday night in Ballard, Kiana Hall spotted a small, round, gray animal moving across the grass near the Goodwill. At first she thought it was a cat. When she got closer and filmed it, she realized it was a raccoon with a very unusual shape — a noticeably shortened spine and neck that makes him look compact and almost “cryptid-like.”
She posted the short video on Instagram the next day and casually named him Jimothy because “he looked like a Jimothy.” The caption mentioned he appeared to have short spine syndrome. The clip exploded — millions of views in just a couple of days.
Soon after, another Ballard resident shared doorbell/security camera footage of the same raccoon on their balcony, squeezing between railings and exploring. People on Reddit started calling him a local legend, a “scrappy hometown hero,” and “the most Seattle animal possible.”
Media picked it up fast. The New York Post ran a sensational headline about a “mutant creature stalking Seattle,” while The Seattle Times published a more grounded piece on July 16. A wildlife vet expert confirmed it’s almost certainly short spine syndrome — a rare congenital condition. Importantly, Jimothy is healthy, very spry, and moving around normally. He was likely born this year and is living his best wild life.
Locals are obsessed in the best way: protective comments everywhere (“protect Jimothy at all costs”), memes, and pure joy that something this weird and wholesome showed up in their neighborhood.
Bottom line: He’s not a mutant or alien. He’s just a real raccoon with a genetic quirk who happens to be extremely good at going viral.
Praise Jimothy. 🦝
