The young have always done stupid things. I did my share of them with my friends. And on my mission. But now there’s this compulsive need to record the stupid things and put them online where everyone can see them forever.
Too many teeny-bopper sisters dancing for baptisms on tiktok.
Imagine a world where no one got married and only a few people even tried living together or having a kid. Now trying selling marriage there. It would be like hyping up pain or inconvenience. It would seem anachronistic, some weird relic from the past. Some people might like the romantic notion of it, but actually doing it would be way, way too much work. Besides, even if you wanted to get married in that world, how would you find ANYONE else who did too? Much less someone attractive. Talking about marriage in that world is exactly like the way we talk about thick community now.

The trap goes like this: you care whether something is good, wise, effective, or appropriate. So you notice when it isn’t. That requires a distinction between better and worse. That distinction gets called “judgment.” Judging is bad. Therefore caring itself becomes suspect.
“Ugh, every member a mission president.” Don’t expect members to invest in missionary work while insisting we have no standing to care about missionary conduct. If members have to explain contradictory conduct to those being fellowshiped, they get to have an opinion about it.

@adam_ebberts I was living that content in the late 2010s all day. Ultimately a lot of hot air and I follow almost none of that content now. But at the same time, I can't say it didn't play an essential part of the equation to push me out of corporate and into necessary life changes.

And he said what we should be asking is what did you share at church that we learned during the week? Maybe the church won't be a crutch or a club.

When Boomers start dying off, nearly every major American religious group is going to be in a load of trouble. It's going to impact Southern Baptists and United Methodist at nearly the same time. Nearly half their adult members are 60+. The only large traditions that will escape this are Catholics and LDS.
This sounds exactly right, but in my observation "FSY standards" has largely come to mean "no standard" rather than a higher law.
"The revision of the [FSY] guide started with vaping. The guide that we had previously didn't say anything about vaping, and so everybody was all panicked, and we kept getting letters saying, "We need to redo the guide, and we need to put 'don't vape' in there." And so we went
@Churros_Barkley Yep, I helped run a group in my last area. Same thing. The only complication, in my mind, is Primary, who probably needs to know if they'll have 50 minutes with the kids or 90.
It's only hinted at here and in the training materials I've seen but it sure seems like the door is open to having a shorter sacrament meeting. Prayers, songs, business, the sacrament, a couple of short speakers, end 15 minutes early every week.
