Why you should invest in Coconut plantation in 2026! Coconut is eaten by everyone, it's called the "Tree of Life" (No part of it is a waste, from its root to the fonds it's all useful) It's a steady money making venture for farmers & non farmers. Fairly low capital investment, easy to grow & a steady flow of income every year for 100 years. The great thing about Coconut is that they're always in season all year long The word “coconut” comes from Spanish “coco” meaning skull or scary face because of the 3 pores (or 3 eyes) on every coconut shell. There are 3 types. Dwarf Variety - start producing by 3-4 years Tall varieties - start production by year 5-9years common in Nigeria. The tall variety lives longer than dwarf variety. Also Tall varieties are less prone to disease and pest (anything short dey get problem) Hybrid - mature faster and have more nut production compared to the 2. If you want to go into commercialized coconut, choose Hybrid (but ask questions) Planting density is ~200 trees per hectare. Each tree will produce around 70-90 fruits every year and it increases as the tree matures. At an average N300 per nut, a farmer with one hectare of coconut trees is a millionaire by Naija standards 😊 Some crops Beans, potatoes, vegetables e.t.c can be intercropped with Coconut trees. Coconut plantation doesn't really need Intensive maintenance like Cocoa... it's more like little or no maintenance at all. Coconut production is a long term investment... It's called the 3 generation plant (you go chop money, your pikin go chop inside, your grand children too go chop the remaining) There are great product from coconut - Oil Milk Cream Sugar Flakes Butter Nigeria is loosing good revenue from Coconut value chain, majority of the Coconut we consume in Nigeria are imported from Cote D'Ivoire, Ghana & Benin Republic. Let’s talk about something that frustrates every pepper farmer during dry season , " thrips ". You know those tiny, almost invisible insects that hide under your pepper leaves? They suck the juice from the leaves until the plants start curling, looking pale, and losing flowers. Sometimes, you even water well, yet your peppers still look weak , that’s them ( thrips ). I went through it myself one dry season. I lost a good part of my yield before I figured it out. But since then, I’ve been using simple, natural methods that actually work. Let me share them with you. First thing is to keep your farm clean. Thrips love to hide inside dry weeds and old leaves. If you finish harvest and leave debris on the ground, you’re just giving them a place to multiply. Clear your farm properly, especially before planting or as soon as you notice the problem. That simple cleaning can cut their numbers drastically. Now the second one ; Dogonyaro, or Neem leaves. This one works like magic if you use it right. Just pound a handful of neem leaves, soak them in water overnight, strain it in the morning, and add a little black soap so it sticks to the leaves. Spray early morning or late evening, twice a week. It doesn’t kill them instantly, but it disturbs their life cycle. Give it a week or two and you’ll see the difference. Number three ; use wood ash and soap mixture. If the thrips are already showing clearly, this one gives quick relief. Mix one tablespoon of black soap in ten liters of water, add two cups of fine wood ash, shake well, and spray under the leaves. The ash dries them out, and the soap helps it stay on the plant. Then number four , always keep your soil moist. Thrips love dry, dusty conditions. So, if your soil dries up too much, you’re helping them multiply. Use light mulching ; like dry grass, rice husk, or groundnut shells. It keeps moisture and makes the place uncomfortable for them. If you have extra space, try trap crops like onions or marigold around your peppers. Thrips will move to those plants first. After a while, you can uproot and burn them to destroy the pests. Finally , check early, act fast. Don’t wait until your pepper leaves are badly curled. Every few days, turn the leaves and check the underside. If you see shiny silver patches or tiny black dots, that’s thrips. Spray immediately. You see, thrips are small but dangerous. They don’t shout, they just reduce your yield quietly. But if you stay consistent with these simple steps : clean field, neem spray, ash mix, moisture, and regular checks , you’ll keep them under control and your peppers will stay strong all through the dry season.
