Need to take some clandestine photography? The Minox subminiature camera was the tool of choice for Cold War spies on both sides of the Iron Curtain. Operatives would photograph sensitive documents in seconds, flipping pages, snapping shots, and walking away without a trace.
These cameras were small enough to hide in your palm or pocket, and the photos were sharp enough to capture all the details of a top-secret document. It's no wonder that for nearly 40 years, the Minox was the go-to spy device for taking secret snapshots.

The Minox Riga (or Minox I) is the original subminiature "spy camera" designed by Walter Zapp and produced in Latvia between 1937 and 1944. It is a rare collector's item famous for its extremely small size, durable stainless steel body, & use by intelligence agencies like the CIA
A 20th-Century Espionage Icon: The Minox Camera
Although Minox is frequently associated with Germany, its origins lie in Rīga, Latvia. The camera was invented by the Baltic German designer Walter Zapp, and the first mass-produced models (the "Minox Riga") were manufactured at the VEF factory between 1937 and 1943. It was a technological marvel; at the time, no other camera in the world combined such a diminutive size with such high-precision optics.
The Minox was not originally conceived as a specialist tool for spies—Zapp intended it to be a "lifestyle" camera that could be carried easily in one's pocket. However, its unique characteristics made it an ideal instrument for intelligence services:
Size: It was smaller than a cigar lighter and could be easily concealed within a palm or the folds of clothing.
Macro Photography: The Minox lens could focus at an extremely close range (down to 20 cm), allowing for exceptionally clear photographs of documents and maps.
Speed of Use: The camera operated with a sliding motion; opening and closing the device simultaneously advanced the film and cocked the shutter, enabling rapid-fire photography.
After the Second World War, production moved to West Germany, and the Minox became standard issue for intelligence agencies on both sides of the Iron Curtain—including the CIA, the KGB, and the British MI6. It has appeared in countless films, most notably in the James Bond series. In the real world, notorious spies such as John Walker, who passed US Navy secrets to the USSR, relied specifically on the Minox.
Following the war, Walter Zapp moved to West Germany, as Latvia—the original home of the Minox—had been occupied by the Soviet Union. He took his expertise and patents with him. The Soviet occupying authorities did not resume the Minox production line at the VEF factory, as it required a level of precision and specific raw materials that the USSR’s planned economy was either unable or unwilling to provide at the time.
While the USSR produced "cheaper and bulkier" versions for the masses, the authentic Minox remained a symbol of Western technology—a prize that Soviet spies were desperate to get their hands on.
@cqcqcqdx Lovely radio! Though calling a VEF Spīdola "Soviet" just because of the occupation is a bit like crediting a car thief for the engineering of your Honda. 😂 It’s 100% Latvian design and manufacturing straight out of Riga!
IT'S TIME FOR STRANGE SPY FACTS! CAMERA AND PHOTOGRAPH EDITION!
Walter Zapp, who worked as a photographer’s assistant lugging around heavy cameras as a youth, invented the tiny Minox. Although produced as consumer product, just owning one could attract suspicion.
