“You’re responsible for yourself and education can empower you if you let it.” That applies far beyond NBA players and affects other sports like soccer. When any athlete finally comes into their own breakthrough, they will face that exact same test. The ones who pass it almost always combine continuous self-education; competent but vetted professionals (ideally fee-only fiduciaries, not just commission-driven); personal oversight and skepticism; and long-term thinking over short-term status. The NBA can improve support and agent standards for its players, as it does, but no external fix really replaces an individual deciding “this is my life and what I worked for, and I’m going to understand it no matter what it takes.” It’s about doing. @mlxdoing.

That’s just an education problem. Unfortunately, you have to put in at least as much work into learning how to maintain your finances as you did in gaining them, or you will likely be separated from them eventually. Now, you obviously can’t do everything and must have help for some things. But some things are too risky to delegate. The idea that someone else must do something as valuable as that for you while you focus on your craft is, frankly, just naive. Brown’s own approach of reportedly skipping an agent shows the way. Even NBA team owners handle their own money. You’re just a player. There are incentives at play. Those people have their own families to worry about too. They are not your parents. You really think they can ever put you on the same level in their minds just because of how talented you are? That’s naive. The real problem is being dependent on people who are as human as you. The odds that you will be taken advantage of is on the high side. As long as you understand that aspect of human nature you’ll be fine. This is your life. Don’t be naive. You will age out of the league in the end and must be ready for life after basketball. After retirement, a time comes when most won’t be the celebrities they once were. It’s probably better by then if you were a role player—if you have all your resources you earned—than if you win a championship every year but have nothing to show for it in the end after the league lets you go, the fans move on, and it’s just you—just like it was in the beginning. Try not to be too naive. You’re responsible for yourself and education can empower you if you let it.

Great point from Hassabis on using AI simulations to make complex systems like economies and societies more repeatable and scientific. Development economists already run rigorous randomized controlled trials routinely. Esther Duflo, Abhijit Banerjee, and Michael Kremer won the 2019 Nobel for popularizing exactly this experimental approach to testing policy interventions. The real remaining challenge is scaling to large macro or societal-level experiments, where logistics and ethics make repeated real-world trials difficult. That’s precisely where high-fidelity AI simulations could deliver massive value by letting us test thousands of scenarios safely. @DevEconX is already doing this at industrial scale with the highest ethical standards, helping turn rigorous evidence into transformative impact. This is much like how Steve Jobs designed Apple University to institutionalize Apple’s culture for the long term. Apple University uses confidential, business-school-style case studies of the company’s biggest decisions (both successes and failures) to teach employees its core values: accountability, extreme attention to detail, and a relentless focus on simplicity. Similar internal “universities” exist at McDonald’s, in the film industry, at Deloitte, and others. Rather than generic training, they deliberately pass down what makes the organization distinctive. It’s a seismic shift for the gaming industry. One thing physical media did for games was to build community in the in-person sense, by enabling players to share media with friends and so on. If you’re not an hardcore gamer following all the news online, one of the ways you might find out about sleeper or even major hits would be for your friends to tell you about them. They’d presumably be excited to share their disc for you to try it in your spare time. A physical copy is also actually “yours” in a more permanent sense.
