Texas public schools are navigating a perfect storm of financial challenges: record inflation, the conclusion of crucial federal funds for post-pandemic recovery, declining enrollment, increased school safety requirements, and a host of funding pressures beyond the control of local school districts. The Texas Legislature last increased per-student funding in 2019, forcing many local school districts to face dire and deep budget cuts. Rising inflation and subsequent adjustments mean districts effectively operate with $1,300 less per student than they did five years ago. So, despite what some erroneously claim, funding for our public schools has eroded over the decade. Next session, the #txlege, and the Governor, must step up and ensure that we finally invest in our children who are the future of our state. 3/3

Today #txlege House members received a revised version of the Fiscal Size-Up chart on preK-12 funding since 2016, adjusted for compounded state population/inflation growth. Bottom line— funding is down 12.6%.
