FWIW I didn't take his last name, our kids did, our oldest is 11, and I have experienced zero administrative hurdles due to this difference.

I think what this position misses is: 1) Kids are gonna have a surname 2) Having the whole household share a surname really is useful for a whole lot of purposes and parents who don't share surnames with their kids often face administrative challenges 3) Making up a new surname

I’m interested in what would cause ICE to say “wait, we actually killed an American citizen by mistake.” The immediate reflexive “s/he deserved it” regardless of the evidence or video is disgusting.

So I wanted to say, as a pro free speech, pro-2A conservative who has spent a lot of time in my job debunking media BS: I disagree too. People can have a range of thoughts on immigration enforcement, and still oppose this kind of untrained brutality. They're separate questions.

My feed has quite a few posts defending ICE in the context of the Pretti shooting. Many of them seem to assume that the only people who disagree are far leftists duped by mainstream media propaganda. This is just tribalism, you guys. Tribalism is thought-ending.

In 1976, 92% of high school seniors said that they had consumed alcohol in their lives. In 2022, that was 53%. Smoking cigarettes went from 76% to 17% during the same time period. Marijuana use is down by 26 pts. Oh, and teen pregnancy is down 75% since the early 1990s.

Stressed to wake up this morning not sure if my differential equations exam is today or tomorrow. Relieved to realize it's neither, because I'm not taking a differential equations class, because I have been out of school for many years. Lol.

Your 20s are a very, very good time to get married and have babies, and it's quite odd that our cultural script for the UMC/striver types no longer acknowledges this fact. (Since moving back to Brooklyn, I've gotten quite a few "you're the nanny, right?" comments, which is bizarre because I am CURRENTLY PREGNANT and also because my child and I look EXACTLY alike; apparently impossible to fathom that someone could live in Brooklyn and have multiple kids before age 30.) If you would like to have three kids, or four kids, getting started at 25 or 26 will make that easier to achieve than if you get started a decade later. But there are many benefits beyond that. More time on Earth with your children, for starters! More generational overlap in which both your children and your parents are alive and active and able to remember, able to have relationships with one another. Relatedly: Less time that you will spend as a sandwich-generation dual caregiver. Less social isolation: friendships really do disintegrate a bit as time passes and people enter and exit different life stages, your 20s can be much more social than your 30s for many people, and having less social isolation during young-parenthood stage is really nice. And, hate to say it, but way more energy. It's just true! I also think that in some ways, going through leaner financial times while raising children can be clarifying in terms of figuring out priorities and how you want to allocate money. When money is abundant, it is easy to waste. When it is more scarce (good to a degree), you must be more selective about whether the expensive extracurricular is actually worth it.

Pulling out this chart to highlight in particular. US births are shifting later (and becoming rarer) even as intended fertility remains relatively stable. It's hard to catch up later in life when the "prudent" time to have kids slips later and later.
