My notes from Douthat's talk, Douthat: digital existence. 3 forces builing off one another Substitution: what we have lived through as a culture. Digital goods for in person, real, flesh and blood goods. Online dating can get the job done but it is worse than in person. SAme with Friendship. Same is true for politics. Substituted goods are inferior. Distraction: they are inferior but they are always available. Obsolescence: they make things obsolete very quickly. Combine them with an Era that was already suffering through a crisis of faith. The result is a large environment of drift, despair. Things can very quickly disappear. The story of the next couple of decades could be a story of mass extinction. Forms of cultural transmissions can disappear very quickly. Things will not happen “naturally”, but under conditions of agency and intentionality. If you’re just interested in the continuity of the human race .None of that will happen automatically under digital condition. People, nations, cultures that don’t choose this consciously will disappear. What drives agency and intentionality is FAITH. Optimism like the rocket builders, and religious faith. Fundamentally good news for people of faith for those who carry that confidence. Those beliefs are going to be selected for in a ruthlessly Darwinian fashion. Those who do believe are looking for ways of being to survive whatever world awaits on the other side. A lot of forces seem very powerful today might not make it because they lack the kind of intentionality that is required to get through the bottleneck. Think as much about the forms of faith as those in silicon valley… The choice for is to go back to the beginning, life, death, blessing and curse, choose life.
