Progesterone and thyroid cleared up 4 years of histamine intolerance in 3 days. The woman had normal thyroid labs. She had severe histamine intolerance for 4 years after being given B12 injections. She spent 4 years trying to “repair my methylation cycle”. “Supplementing a large dose of progesterone (the counterbalance to estrogen) reduced my HIT symptoms significantly, but supporting my thyroid resolved my HIT entirely. It was completely an accident. I had some other symptoms that made me think I might be slightly hypothyroid despite “normal” thyroid blood levels. I started supplementing with OTC desiccated thyroid and as soon as I titrated up to the right dose for my body, my HIT resolved entirely within three days.” Progesterone inhibits mast cell degranulation. Low thyroid hormone levels cause massive histamine dumping. “Mast cells express high affinity estrogen receptors and estradiol augments their secretion, while tamoxifen inhibits it. PEA significantly reduces irritability and hyperactivity in autism. This was a 10-week RCT with 70 children split into two groups, both given risperidone; one also given PEA and the other a PEA placebo. Changes in irritability. Starting score was about 22. Lower is better. With risperidone alone, it fell 6.6 points, a 31% improvement. With PEA added, it fell 10.1 points, a 46% improvement. 71% of the risperidone-only group improved by at least a quarter, versus 97% of the PEA group. For a halving of symptoms, it was 16% versus 26% (PEA). Changes in hyperactivity. Starting score was about 28. With risperidone alone, it fell 2.8 points, an 11% improvement. With PEA added, it fell 7.4 points, a 27% improvement. 23% improved by at least a quarter on risperidone alone versus 68% with PEA. Children halving their symptoms: 3% versus 19% (PEA). PEA (palmitoylethanolamide) is a naturally occurring fatty-acid amide made in human tissues. The researchers put the effects down to PEA's action on glutamate and neuroinflammation. I suspect some of the effect may be from mast cell stabilization, lowering histamine and serotonin, as well as anti-TLR4 effects. The trial used 600 mg of PEA per day. Micronized PEA is the way to go. Some effects were seen at 5 weeks, but it was much more effective at 10 weeks, which parallels other research into PEA. On side effects, the PEA group had fewer cases of headache (1 vs 3), sedation (1 vs 2), diarrhea (1 vs 2), and rash (0 vs 1), and slightly more abdominal pain (2 vs 1) and constipation (2 vs 0). Years ago, I treated an MS patient who had Lyme causing his illness. He was disabled, with lots of demyelination on his MRI's. Happily, he responded well to long term antimicrobials, got off disability, and had dramatic resolution of most of the demyelinating lesions in his brain and spine. His neurologist at first refused to accept it, kept writing "chronic Lyme" in quotes in the medical notes, to imply that it was a fictitious condition (docs can be so petty). He attributed the improvements to spontaneous remission for the first year or so, but after a while he begrudgingly admitted that the antimicrobials must have helped. Literally 20 years later I had a patient with that same neurologist. She had a diagnosis of possible MS, wasn't disabled, but had very significant quality of life impairments due to numbness and weakness. I found evidence of Lyme so I treated her too. And happily her neurologic symptoms resolved by more than 95%. When I got a copy of her notes from that same neurologist, he was still putting "chronic Lyme" in quotes. Still refused to believe his patients as well as his own eyes. The moral of the story: Some docs are stubborn morons who will never change. Here's some info about Lyme & MS. Conclusion: Our findings strongly suggest that carrageenan gene locus is a recent adaptation of gut microbiota in North American people due to the increased use of carrageenan in the diet. Therefore, the industrial application of carrageenan as a dietary fiber should be carefully revisited since our investigations provide the in vitro evidence of gut bacterial enzymatic digestion of carrageenan into potentially harmful poligeenan.
