I talked with two different friends this week about how tough marketing is right now. Everyone's hunting for the next channel because for the last ~20 years there has always been a next channel but it's not super clear to me that there is one. SEO is dead. Google AI responses take up half the page and Forbes pumps out something like 800 garbage AI articles a day and ranks number one for basically every term. X/LI/Insta and all the other social networks are slop farms and consumers are slowly realizing that. Quoting @AndrewChen: all the channels just suck right now. So where does distribution actually go? My latest thinking is that it splits into two extremes, and the algorithmic layer in the middle everyone is used to playing in gets squeezed. At one end, you make it fully human. The growth channel now is really group chats and the cozy web, not the public feed. Things spread because sharing them makes you look smart or kind or funny to the other people in the chat. My group chat usage is up relative to all my social networks the last couple of years and I think that's universal. I've been thinking about it as a Marshall McLuhan tribal thing: when the algorithmic channels fill up with slop, everyone falls back on their real-world social network instead. Guest posting is making a comeback because it is inherently embedded in a real social network. A person I like and follow vouching for someone is worth way more than an algorithm placing it in front of me. At the other end, you make your product maximally friendly for LLMs, something like what @DanShipper has called agent-native architecture. I know quite a few businesses getting more than half their signups from ChatGPT/Claude/Gemini. They format everything as LLM-friendly structured data about their niche, and the models love to cite that. The pages are basically all AI-generated with nobody even reviewing them, but it doesn't matter because they aren't for human consumption. (Kind of hilarious because AI is making the pages it is then citing in subsequent chats) Supabase is the cleanest case. They made their docs and tooling absurdly friendly for coding agents, and now more than half of all new Supabase databases are spun up by an agent instead of a human, Claude Code being the biggest single source. The more interesting version is you start building the product itself for the agent. @krishnanrohit has this idea of "homo agenticus" that stuck with me: what would you build if your customer were a homo agenticus instead of a homo sapien? Your product used to have to mesh onto how humans think. Now there's this intermediate layer of agents to mesh onto. I keep coming back to RockAuto, the car-parts site that looks like it hasn't been redesigned since 2003. To a normal shopper it's archaic. But it maps perfectly onto how someone who actually knows parts thinks: fitment first, then part class, then manufacturer and SKU. It's actually an example of incredibly good UI for who it serves even though it looks like garbage to most people. It seems like the algorithmic layer in between is getting squeezed. The feed that ran marketing from 2010 to 2024 is hollowing out, caught between the fully-human end and the fully-machine one.

Yeah, it was my Fable project when it was briefly available. I started with my bullroarer research (~200 attestations), then sent agents loose to find more. Built a whole harness of rejecting edge cases (buzzers, blog posts, etc). The Kurnai in the SE also connect the Dreamtime/bullroarer to the time of the rising seas: bullroarer.org/?tour=2#map=5.… It's unclear to me why this isn't a better researched question. There are some academics that bang on about taking indigenous knowledge seriously. Isn't this exactly the type of thing?

Multi-touch marketing attribution nearly impossible. Even Shopify’s 600-person killer growth team can’t do it. They look at incremental channel lift only. I know, there someone out there who made it work for some company. It’s not worth trying, for 99.99% of us.
