On a radio show yesterday, the host asked me about the future of the Republican Party. I said it’s the MAGA party now for good. Duh. I said the GOP will NEVER again be a party of freedom, free markets, free trade, robust legal immigration, and limited government. It’ll never again be the party that sees America as THE force for good in the world, that sees America as that “shining city on a hill.” I said those of us who believe in these things need to look elsewhere.

A partir de janeiro de 2025 vamos lançar um novo curso-relâmpago de verão que tem como objetivo entender os grandes desafios para a democracia da época em que vivemos. É correto esclarecer como penso aos que se inscrevem nos meus programas autorais de aprendizagem sobre democracia, redes, desenvolvimento e inovação: 1 - Não sou de esquerda (seja revolucionária, dita ‘progressista’, classista, identitarista ou populista), nem de direita (seja reacionária, conservadora ou populista). 3 - Entendo que na democracia os conservadores são players legítimos e necessários, mas não me definiria como conservador e sim como inovador. 4 - Considero que os populismos do século 21, sejam ditos de esquerda (neopopulismo) ou de direita (populismo--autoritário ou nacional-populismo), são os principais adversários da democracia liberal no mundo atual. Cada qual a seu modo, são todos não-liberais (ou iliberais). 5 - Apreendo a democracia como regime político e como modo-de-vida; não apenas como a regra do jogo, mas como o próprio jogo; como um processo (o processo de democratização ou de desconstituição de autocracia) e não como um modelo; reconheço que a democracia está em crise, mas avalio que as democracias que queremos só podem ser geradas no ventre da democracia que temos. 6 - Entendo que não há solução sem política, que não há saída fora da democracia, que não há democracia sem democratas e – como o número de agentes democráticos que temos é insuficiente para fermentar o processo de formação de uma opinião pública democrática – que a tarefa principal dos democratas é multiplicar o número de agentes democráticos: e é por isso que tenho promovido, nos últimos 15 anos, tantos programas de aprendizagem da democracia e de temas correlatos. 7 - Talvez seja desnecessário acrescentar, mas é bom deixar claro num ambiente polarizado como o do Brasil atual: não sou lulopetista, nem bolsonarista. Ninguém precisa concordar com meus pontos de vista, elencados acima, mas é justo que todos possam saber como penso antes de se increverem nos programas que promovo.
