The Hindu temples earn a lot of money from donations and other sources; all of it belongs to the deity. The governments have separate departments and ministers to manage the temple affairs; but it is a sad state of affairs that the very temples' Prohits are in penury. Their salary is pittance when compared with the present day's cost of living. They are not in a position to provide even the essentials, leave alone comforts, to their families. Thus far, they had been at the mercy of a HR&CE which treated them with scant respect. They were bullied not to take for themselves even what money was left for them in the அர்ச்சனை தட்டு. And it is needless to add that they cannot even afford good education to their children, as the governments do not help them on this score (although the temple funds are collected and managed by the governments). The temple money belongs to the deities of the temples; the purohits are the care takers of the deities; and how evil is that to deny those care-takers of even a decent living! It amounts to the government refusing to use the deities' personal funds for the welfare of the care givers of the respective deities! Since their jobs require it, every day, the Purohits walk the lengths and breadths of the temples, climbing up and down the different levels of the same. And so, most of them suffer from swollen knees and peripheral edima, (even the younger ones of them). They work all day in damp, musty and ill ventilated sanctum sanctorums; they bathe many times a day to ensure they follow the ritual stipulations even when they are unwell. Their's is not an easy job. Their deities are quite rich and yet the prohits are not able to lead a decent life. Why? Because the governments have usurped charge of the temple wealth and administration. The governments are but trustees of the deity and they should remember to act so. Can the Tamilnadu govt please fix a scale of pay for the prohits, commensurate with the pay scale of government servants? With time scale increments and grades? The Prohits ought to be given pension and medical reimbursements. We people offer money to the deity, and, the care takers of the deity must be treated respectfully and provided with decent salaries. The government should do it as the temple funds are in its custody. With the same funds let the government pay for their children's education. After all, we Hindus offer what we can to the temples, to cover all the expenses of the deities. The prohits are vassals of the deities. @CMOTamilnadu @tnhrcedept
