Igala rule shaped our history and culture. There is hardly any community which founding did not include the Igala. Ebu in Delta (not far from Asaba) is still Igala speaking. Idah was our London then 🤣 🤣. This did not make us less Igbo. Nsukka is Igbo, not Igala. Many Igbo communities at the outer boundary of Igbo land adjacent to Igala (including mine, Anam) became vassals of the powerful Igala kingdom in the 19th Century. Migration flows naturally align with neighboring communities (the children of Iyida Ogbe, wife of Field Marshall Ogbe - Okpanam (Delta) Anam, Nzam, Anaku (Anambra) and Ilushi (Edo) migrated from around Ankpa when the Apa and Jukun invaded Igala in the 15th/17th Centuries). Culture and languages commingle. As an illustration, Anam Christianity and education arrived via Idah (we were under Idah Parish), my father’s generation farmed in Igala (Ibaji) - Odemomo, Iramawa etc - and many spoke Igala. Our masquerades still “return” to Idah, Moi-moi is called elele (ilélé), Obadigbo is a common name and young men call themselves, “Agabaidu” (royal salutation for Attah Igala). Anam’s brother, Nzam (the hometown of Barrister Ekwealor who served as Speaker of the old Anambra State Assembly) still speaks Igala as a second language. Odobo, Enekpa, Igah and Iyano are quarters in Nzam and names of towns in today’s Ibaji (Igala) LGA. (As a kid I played on the sandbars/islands of the River Niger facing Aganibode when visiting Idah). Our deep connection with Igala (deep historical, cultural, and linguistic connections) makes neither Anam, nor Illah, Asaba, Osomala, Nsukka, Opi, Eke Avurugo/Nwajala, etc, Igala. We are all Igbo at the core. (Take a look at your maps. Geography explains it all).
