Now, like many lapidary descriptions from antiquity, ceraunia are difficult to pinpoint. And it is clear there were widely different types from obviously very different mineralogical compositions. We have a few contenders: - Beryl-like crystals - Red-tinted quartz - Pointed Stone Age artifacts - Meteors and tektites In my own practice of image and astrological magic, I use the meteoric type and prescribe them under Jupiters rulership. The ancients described meteoric phenomena as bolts of lightning accompanied by resounding thunder and thus, the description fits the narrative. Anecdotally, the most powerful type of ceraunia are those meteors that contain crystalline olivine. Tektites like moldavite, however, I place under Mercury as they are produced from impact and the fusion of various minerals and cooled through the air, a by-product of divine judgement.

Heading back to one of the main sources of mineral and gem descriptions that classical authors used, we have Pliny the Elder’s “Natural History”. In Book 37 of the work, Pliny describes three types of ceraunia. The first being a type of rock crystal with a “brilliant blue sheen”. This is likely Magnus’ source. The second type mentioned are what can only be described as elongated Stone Age axe-heads and spear tips. Pliny says the black colored ones are useful for attacking and plundering cities. These stones were believed to have been created in the clouds by pressure and vapors. The third and most interesting type he describes are found where he says only lightning has struck. He adds that the Magi seek this variety out the most. Ceraunius of the third kind likely are meteors, tektites, or even fulgurites.

On Stones: Ceraunia Ceraunia, also known as ceraunius or ceraurum, is a term used to describe a specific type of stone found in lapidaries ranging from the late Roman period to the late Middle Ages. The name ceraunia comes from the Greek word for ‘a thunderbolt’ as these stones were believed to ward off lightning. In addition to protection from lightning, many times ceraunia are associated with victory, good sleep, and for general wisdom and protection. From these attributes, and that they were said to fall from the sky, we find that ceraunia are most commonly prescribed to the planet Jupiter. The challenge we see, regarding ceraunius entires in lapidaries, are the naming conventions changing across different cultures and folk beliefs. This thread will focus on and document a few types of ceraunia, their Latin sources, and their magical and spiritual implications.
